According to source, The Alabama State University men’s basketball team continued its streak on the road as it defeated Alcorn State 62-53 on Monday night.

ASU also beat Southern University this past weekend. The road wins extended the Hornets’ win streak to five games.

Alabama State (11-16, 8-6 SWAC) led Alcorn State 31-21 at halftime, shooting 44 percent from the field. The Braves connected on just 27 percent of their first-half attempts.

ASU won by 13 when the teams played in Montgomery.

“I am pleased that our guys were focused on this road trip,” said Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson. “I felt like winning these two games on the road would put us in a nice spot as far as seeding for the tournament.”

A flagrant foul early in the second half by Alcorn State (3-21, 3-11) gave ASU’s Tramaine Butler one free throw. Kenderek Washington made a three on the ensuing possession pushing lead to 38-21.

Leading 46-32 with 8:04 to play, Tramayne Moorer made back-to-back 3’s, increasing the lead to 20 points.

The Hornets are now 7-1 when Moorer is in the lineup.

“I honestly wanted to keep Tramayne out tonight because he is so banged up,” Jackson said. “Alcorn stayed in the game and he (Moorer) ended up making some big shot for us down the stretch.”

Moorer scored 13 points. Kenderek Washington finished with 12. Chris Duncan posted a near triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Marquiz Baker led Alcorn State with 12 points.

In the women’s game, Alcorn State won, 72-67.

Alabama State Athletics to Host Special Events

According to source, The Alabama State University basketball teams will play their next three games in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome and the ASU athletic department has announced special events that will take place during these games.

On February 5, the basketball teams will host the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The ASU athletic department will recognize all of Montgomery’s City and County Employees. The women’s game will tip off at 3 p.m. with the men’s game scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

On Monday, February 7, ASU will host Mississippi Valley State University in a regionally televised ESPNU broadcast. The athletic department is asking all ASU fans are encouraged to wear black as ASU would like to have a “Black Out” for the televised event. The Air Elite slam dunk team will provide halftime entertainment and free t-shirts will be given to the first 200 people to arrive for the games.

The women’s game will begin at 3 p.m. followed by the men’s televised game at 6 p.m.

The final game of the three-game home stand will be Saturday, February 12 when ASU will host conference rival Alabama A&M University. The athletic department will have a day-long list of events scheduled as ASU celebrates 75 Seasons of Basketball.

All former players and coaches are invited to attend and can register for the event at www.asu75seasons.com. The women’s game will tip off at 3 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 5:30 p.m.

Alabama State University, founded 1867, is a historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama.Alabama State University offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of areas.

The board of trustees is currently preparing bond documents to fund the project. They have the land and have the site picked out.Just watch out for their new football stadium in the future.
