New dorms, student center open at Albany State

According to source – Albany State University has started out the new semester with two new student dormitories and a newer student center.

Freshmen students started moving into Hall 5, one of the two new residence halls, on Aug. 6. The second new residence building, Hall 6, will house sophomore, junior and senior students.

Almost 600 students will call these new residence halls home during the academic year.

The Albany Herald reports that Albany State President Everett Freeman states the new dorms are required for the reason that university continues to grow.

The newest dorms consist of such amenities as wireless Internet connections, a demonstration kitchen, a dance room and a performance area.

Albany State University adds Valdosta to football schedule

According to source – A rivalry has been renewed. Albany Condition College and Valdosta Condition College have inked an agreement which will pit the football teams against one another on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m., ASU sports authorities introduced on Monday.

The main one-year deal – that could eventually turn permanent – also gives Albany Condition one more home game this year and finalizes the 2011 football schedule.

“We would have liked to have this 10th game scheduled a long time ago, but it worked out this way,” ASU coach Mike White said. “(Valdosta) is a very good team, and they have a very good record against us.”

In fact, the VSU Blazers have won 13 of the 14 meetings in the series, which dates to 1982. The teams haven’t played since 2007, when the Blazers won, 41-3, in Valdosta.

“We’re thrilled to have Albany State back on our schedule,” said VSU head coach David Dean. “With the proximity of the two schools, it has always been a great rivalry and a big event for South Georgia. Both schools always bring large crowds to the games, and they have seen some great football played over the years.”
