Cameras overseen by an Arizona State University teacher have captured the sharpest photos ever taken from orbit of three Apollo landing sites.
NASA scientists say the images clearly show tracks made by lunar rovers and equipment left behind from the famous Apollo missions of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Photographs taken of the Apollo 17 site, the last manned pursuit to the moon in December 1972, also show the astronauts’ foot trails.
ASU professor Mark Robinson, the lead scientist on the orbiter’s cameras, called the new images “spectacular” in a NASA news briefing on Tuesday.
The cameras are attached to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, an unmanned spacecraft which has been circling the moon for more than two years. Its aim is to map the moon’s surface, record temperatures and measure radiation.
The cameras previously photographed the same sites but from much farther away.
To catch the newest images, the minivan-size orbiter dipped from its usual path 31 miles above the surface of the moon to nearly 13 miles for a month.

According to source – Arizona State University has been named one of the seven best colleges for free speech by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.
FIRE is a nonprofit educational foundation that works to preserve free speech rights on campus and it rates colleges and universities based on their codes of conduct and on reports from outside sources.
Colleges that protect free speech are “green light institutions,” and colleges whose policies restrict free speech are “red light institutions.”
Joseph Russomanno, a professor at the Cronkite School who teaches a course that is based specifically on the First Amendment, said that it is crucial that colleges and universities allow for the exchange of ideas in a “free and open marketplace.”
“Thus, policies that are not restrictive and that encourage expression are necessary,” he said.
ASU is the only Arizona university to have the green light rating from FIRE. It is also the largest public college to be placed on the seven best colleges list. Other colleges on the list were Dartmouth College, the College of William and Mary, the University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and the University of Virginia.

According to source, An expected Arizona State University campus in the city in the coming years will increase student collegiate interest, said several Lake Havasu High School students.
“I think it will be good because I have a feeling more kids will be going to college since they don’t have to leave,” said freshman Zoey Leifer. “They can just go here and stay in town without havng to leave.”
Students said they were surprised that the state’s largest university decided to open a campus here, contingent on a local foundation raising $2 million to help with renovation and operating costs. An official agreement has not been signed and the soonest the campus would be expected to open is fall 2012. ASU officials made the announcement Thursday.
“Not a lot of things come to Havasu,” Leifer said. “It will be cool to have it in town.”
Sophomore Ashley Tutwiler said local students would attend because “it’s more in their comfort zone.”
She said she was planning on attending the university’s main campus in Phoenix once she graduates, but was concerned about the cost of living there.

Home resales across the Phoenix area declined last year, while prices rose just slightly.
A year-end report on home resales and foreclosures from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University found there were 106,975 such sales in the Phoenix area last year. That’s down 5 percent from 112,730 in 2009.
“About 4 percent of the single-family homes in Maricopa County were foreclosed in 2010,” according to Jay Butler, ASU associate professor of real estate, who wrote the report. “Since 2008, more than 11 percent of the single-family homes in the county have been foreclosed.”
Foreclosures represented 39 percent of the resale transactions in 2010, up from 36 percent in 2009. The actual number of Phoenix-area single-family home foreclosures in 2010 was 41,625.
“The year ended in the midst of foreclosure moratoriums, legal challenges to the foreclosure process, weak economic and job recovery, and strict underwriting guidelines for home loans,” said Butler. “The main question for 2011 is whether — when the issues are resolved — the market will begin a path to improvement, or keep being dominated by foreclosures.”
For December alone, the report shows more than 2,400 foreclosures — up from about 2,100 in November.

Through study abroad programs, many students visit different countries to learn about cultures around the world. This week, the Center for Global Education Services is bringing those cultures to ASU.
Since 2000, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education have designated the third week in November as International Education Week.
Organizations and universities across the U.S. and around the world are encouraged to participate in the week by hosting events about education around the globe.
“The week brings international education to the forefront,” said Angela Mitchell, marketing and outreach coordinator for the Center for Global Education Services at ASU.
Universities are not forced into holding events. However, all universities in Arizona are participating, Mitchell said.
Informing students about the opportunities that are available in study abroad is one of the main focuses of International Education Week.
The event, named “Around the World in 80 Minutes,” was a unique and interactive way for students to learn about the University’s study abroad opportunities in many different regions.
