According to source, If you have watched a Heber Springs Sr. Girls basketball game in the past three years, it would be hard not to notice who runs the show on the floor. Senior point guard Jena Kelley, many times the smallest player on the court, has dribbled circles around opposing defenders while leading the Lady Panthers near the top of the 2-4A conference each season.

What some of us don’t know is that she spends many hours off the court playing soccer for the Arkansas Rush, a competitive club team out of Little Rock. From all accounts, Kelley also dribbles circles around defenders on the field.

Oh, and she is a dynamic scorer and passer in both sports too. Combined with the heart and work ethic of a champion, Kelley is taking her soccer skills to Jonesboro, where she officially inked to play with the Arkansas State University Red Wolves on Thursday in front of many of her family, friends, teammates and coaches at the Panther Den.

Kelley primarily plays a midfield forward position for her soccer club. “She scores a lot,” emphasized Rush soccer coach Jeremy Bernard. “She has great one-on-one skills. Her speed is what is really going to make a difference for her at Arkansas State. She is one of our leading goal scorers.”

Heber basketball coach Jamey Riddle hasn’t seen his point guard play soccer, but said her quick feet should make her difficult to defend.

Three Rivers Community College and Southeast Missouri State University are debating over Missouri Department of Higher Education public policy, to decide whether Arkansas State University at Jonesboro should be allowed to come between the in-state institutions.

In a statement issued Friday, Southeast president Dr. Ken Dobbins pointed out MDHE recently posted a dozen out-of-state proposals to deliver degrees in Missouri, such as the nursing program he is seeking to establish in Kennett with ASU.

The Southeast Missourian reported Friday that Dobbins claimed Three Rivers has been asked to deliver a nursing program at Southeast’s regional campus in Kennett “at least three times over the past decade.”

Three Rivers is “more than open to meeting the educational needs for which it is responsible,” Stephenson replied, but added he is unaware of a recent needs analysis, as required by the Missouri State Board of Nursing prior to program approval. The hearing with the state nursing board is slated for March.

This past May, Three Rivers submitted a proposal to the CBHE to offer associate degree programs at its centers in Kennett, Malden and Sikeston. A week later, the Southeast board of regents charged Dobbins with seeking approval to offer two-year degrees in the same locations.

The institutions were instead able to agree upon a reverse transfer option, allowing Southeast students to transfer up to 52 credits to Three Rivers, and then complete a minimum of 12 credit hours in order to obtain an associate degree.

Military veterans, police officers, firefighters, teachers and medical services personnel were treated to free tickets to Arkansas State University’s football game against Western Kentucky Saturday afternoon. According to Doug Doggett with the ASU Red Wolf Club, free tickets were given to honor everyday heroes.

“It takes on special meaning especially when you think about our troops who have finally arrived back home safely and we know they’re not the only ones. there are others who are still in harms way, but those who are here and can come join us get free admission into the game. it’s just our way of honoring them and saying welcome home,” said Doggett.

Hero’s Appreciation Day was held the same day at the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Jonesboro.

Also recognized were the families of soldiers and other heroes with the ability to purchase tickets to Saturday’s game at a reduced price.
