According to source – Jeno James is really a finisher. The 1995 Sidney Lanier graduate would be a three-year starter across the offensive line at Auburn, began an excellent Bowl and, based on USA Today, gained a lot more than $ten million throughout his seven-year National football league career.

As 30-somethings go, James’ resume was stacked.

Yet he wasn’t satisfied. The requirements of school football distracted James’ academic aspirations and that he left Auburn following the 1999 season with no degree.

“I’m the kind of guy who can’t leave things undone. It weighed on my mind for years that I hadn’t gotten that degree,” said James, now a sales and marketing executive in Montgomery. “I wanted to be taken seriously in my post-NFL world — to be seen as an intelligent person. I knew what had to be done.”

James gained a degree in human sciences 2 yrs ago included in just a little-known initiative known as Operation Follow-Through, which will help former Auburn sports athletes complete their academic training — sometimes decades after it started.

AUBURN, AL (WXTX) – Monday morning, Auburn University began removing all of the poisoned soil around the two oak trees. Test results showing the severity of the herbicide in the soil came back last Thursday, so why not begin removing the soil then?

According to source, Officials say that on Wednesday, the same day they broke the news of the poisonings; they put down the activating charcoal into the top soil and were waiting for it to do its job, drawing the herbicide into the charcoal, and away from the roots.

Auburn Officials say by trying to save the clay under the soil and waiting on this process it could save the trees lives. Now the soil will be removed to the roots where more charcoal will be added to the bottom.

“We are down to the clay according to the DOW representative the herbicide should not be any deeper than that, so we’re down roughly 18 inches now and we’re cutting the root mass trying to remove as much solid as possible.” Said Gary Keever, Professor of Horticulture

Last Friday tarps were put around the tree bases to shield rain water from coming down into the soil, some wonder why they weren’t put down shortly after the January 27th phone call to the Paul Finebaum radio show; which was nearly three weeks before they put the tarps down and nearly four inches of rain fell in that time. Keever says they initially thought the rain water would help the trees, “To carry the herbicide out of the roots the herbicide is very water soluble and we thought that it might pull it out of the roots and that’d be beneficial to the tree but now we’re concerned about how far down it will go.”

A major twist of fate swung Kenny Bigelow’s way last week as the Red Lion Christian sophomore was offered a football scholarship by Auburn University.

Auburn football coach Gene Chizik came to Red Lion to talk to another recruit, Angelo Blackson, about signing a letter of intent next Wednesday to play for the Tigers.

But Blackson had a rescheduled basketballgame that night, and college coaches cannot talk to athletes until they are finished with their competition for the day.

So Chizik watched some film of Red Lion’s football team in coach Eric Day’s office at the school.

He spotted Bigelow, a 6-foot-4, 267-pound sophomore defensive end and tight end who has started the past two years for the Lions.

“Last week it’s the last mad rush for D-I guys to get around and visit their recruits, so [Chizik] was actually in town to visit Angelo,” Day said. “The funny thing was he couldn’t meet with Angelo because he had a basketball game that night.

Universities and colleges across the nation are welcoming student-athletes with open arms as we head into National Signing Day on Wednesday. “Players, players, players, it’s how you’re going to win,” said Recruiting Coordinator at Auburn University Curtis Luper.

When you talk about competing for 18-year old boys to come play football on a collegiate level, Auburn University coaches say it is a sophisticated race. “Recruiting is like shaving. If you don’t do it everyday, it shows,” said Assistant Head Coach Trooper Taylor. Recruiting is a 12 month process that never stops. Coaches say they not only have to recruit the player, but also the family. “The key in recruiting is helping find out who is making the decision for the young man,” said Luper.

Coach Taylor said they are only as good as the players they coach and for Auburn, that is pretty easy to say coming off a national championship win. ” We’re going to be national champs for what…11 more months so we will use this to our advantage,” Luper said.

Auburn has 23 committed players with hopes of signing a few more. According to rivals.com, Justin Hokanson said Auburn had a monster month in January reeling in 9 commitments. “It is pretty rare to see a school be ranked 23 before January and then move up to number six,” said Hokanson.

“We’re not afraid to recruit anyone. We will go after the best players, wherever the best players are,” said Taylor. Both Taylor and Luper say National Signing Day is like Christmas and tomorrow we will find out how naughty or nice the Tigers were this recruiting season.
