Azusa Pacific University

According to source – Azusa Pacific University has selected Tim Kyle as the head coach of the Cougars’ emerging women’s swimming and diving program, which enters its fourth year as a varsity program in the 2011-12 school year after posting a program-best fifth-place NAIA finish within the 2011 national title meet.

Kyle comes to Azusa Pacific from Citrus College, where he trained the Owls’ men’s swimming and diving program for 12 seasons and and was named the 2009 Western State Conference Coach of the Year. He brought Citrus to second place in the WSC Titles, that was the program’s best conference finish because it won the league title in 1992.

AZUSA – Pitching has been the Azusa Pacific University baseball team’s Achilles’ heel the past few seasons.

But the Cougars, judging by the first two games of the season, now appear to be appropriately armed.

Cameron Ross combined with Jason Plowman and Nolan Rudman to throw five shutout innings in relief and APU completed a two-game sweep with a 9-2 victory over Simpson of Redding in a nonconference game Wednesday.

Johnathan Erb went 2 for 2 with a home run and scored three runs for the Cougars, who improved to 2-0. APU also had its bullpen turn in five shutout innings in Tuesday’s 8-3 victory over the Red Hawks (0-2) in the season opener.

“(Tuesday) our guys did a good job of pitching through some adverse situations, and they did a good job tonight,” APU coach Paul Svagdis said. “We’ve walked one guy in two games. That’s an emphasis for our pitching staff.

“These guys are a good group of hitters. (Simpson’s lineup) can swing it a little bit. I was really happy with our pitchers throwing strikes and not be afraid that we had some aggressive hitters out there. They all did a good job.”

Simpson, which got RBIs from Daveron Ross and former Citrus infielder Angel Marti, led 1-0 and 2-1. But Erb, an Oxnard College transfer, changed that.

The junior had a double in the second before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Lothrop, then lined a two-run home run in the fourth to give APU a 3-2 lead.

According to source, In the midst of today’s struggling economy, tuition costs may be the deciding factor for those going off to college, making a private education seemingly out of reach. However, recent research from Kiplinger reveals that the actual value of private universities may prove this assumption wrong.

The publisher ranked 100 private universities and 100 liberal arts colleges as the best values in price when considering the quality of education. Out of the 76 private institutions in California, Azusa Pacific University was 1 of only 11 to make the list.

“Azusa Pacific University is on this list because we’re getting better about our discounts, and we have always been great about the value of the experience here,” said Creighton Dent ’06, M.S. ’10, assistant director of marketing and communications in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Senior Director of Undergraduate Admissions Dave Burke seconds the unique value the university offers. “Schools like APU offer a significantly different value and educational experience than schools that don’t have a Christ-centered component,” Burke said.

Current APU graduate student Kyle Cleveland ‘10 transferred to APU to experience such a Christian education. “I chose APU because its people were unlike any I had seen at the 10 colleges I previewed,” he said. “I received some scholarships to attend APU, but as I look back on my experience, it would have been worth paying full price. It’s the best investment I’ve ever made, and it will pay me back for the rest of my life. From APU, I will take my relationships, reputation, and redefined perspective to advance the work of God in the world.”

Kiplinger uses specific criteria to assess which institutions are the best values, including: “small class size, a high-achieving incoming class, a satisfied clientele (measured by how many students return after freshman year) and graduation rates that reflect the school’s ability to deliver its education—and a degree—within four or five years.”1

“I look at the ivy league schools that my high school peers chose to attend, and I realize the experience I’ve received at APU is unmatchable and well worth the price,” said senior marketing major Nina Karim. “The support and guidance from the faculty here is unheard of at other universities, and the dedication of professors and the attention we receive makes it the best value by far.”

For the almost 300 graduate students who walked at Azusa Pacific University’s winter commencement Saturday, the diploma they received symbolized a new beginning as they move into their career fields. For the 24 recipients of honorary degrees, however, the diploma symbolized something else: pride.

“This is possibly the most remarkable group of alumni this school has ever had,” said Jon Wallace, president of the university.

These 24 recipients were students at Azusa Pacific University, then known as Pacific Bible College, during World War II. Because they were Americans of Japanese ancestry, they were forced to abandon their studies and move to internment camps across the United States.

Almost 70 years later, APU recognized these former students with honorary degrees.

Sets Oda, who accepted the degree on behalf of his deceased longtime friend, Doreen Iwata, was surprised to find out about his fellow church member’s schooling.

“She never told me she signed up for school,” Oda said. “I think she would be really happy and say this is great.”

Only six former students came to the ceremony, while the other 18 were represented by family members and friends. Each participant donned a graduation robe and hat.

“It is a real honor to be here,” said David Kuroda, who accepted the degree for his mother, Michiko Fujisaka. “She withdrew at 21, and said that these were some of the happiest days of her life.”

Three of Kuroda’s sisters flew from Northern California to watch the event. During the ceremony, the honorary recipients were asked to stand, and were presented with diplomas as old pictures flashed on the large screens above their heads.

“I felt very honored,” said John Miyabe, one of the six former students present. “It feels nice.”

The group attended a luncheon prior to the ceremony, at which they talked about past times and mutual friends.

“It feels wonderful to find out all the connections,” said Sharon Asakawa, who accepted the degree for her father, Harry Hashimoto. Her father was relocated to Amache, Colo., during the war.

“I feel a little overwhelmed, but very grateful that the school took the time for something so long ago,” said Roy Takaya, who accepted on behalf of his brother, George Takaya, who couldn’t make the ceremony.

“My brother would have loved it.”
