According to source, The Red Storm baseball team opened the season with a series split against Azusa Pacific University.

Dixie State began the season with the goal to win 37 games and started the season off by winning the season opener 2-1.

Dixie State head coach Mike Littlewood said this type of close game is good for the team.

“This game was a grind-it-out, persevere through a little bit of adversity type game, and to come out on top gives us a feeling of ah, we can do it,” he said.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the outset.

Sophomore Mike Dedrick started the game for Dixie State opposite APU junior pitcher Colby Gurney.

Dedrick pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five. The single run for the Cougars came in the top of the sixth inning. Junior first baseman Johnathan Erb doubled to right center for APU then scored after two wild pitches by Dedrick.

The Red Storm would quickly recover though. Gurney had a no-hitter through five innings for APU, but after a one-out walk to sophomore second baseman Quinn Boyer, sophomore third baseman Colton Yack laid a bunt down the third-base line to break it up.

Junior catcher Joe Andrade then came up with runners on first and second. He doubled down the right-field line to bring in both runners and give Dixie a 2-1 lead.
Andrade, a nursing major from Yuma, Ariz., said he had a good idea of what Gurney was going to throw to him and was just glad he was able to capitalize on it.
“He was throwing changeups all day,” he said. “I think he just left one up inside on me and gave me a chance to make a play.”

Littlewood said timely hitting and consistency is something to expect out of Andrade all season.
“He brings a lot of consistency, no doubt about it,” Littlewood said. “He’s hitting in the three hole, which I would think is the toughest place to hit in the lineup.”

Littlewood also said he was pleased with his pitching staff in the first game of the season.

Since it’s the beginning of the new year, a certain number of us will decide to go through our possessions, including our closets, and do some thinning. After all, that was the origin of the British Boxing Day holiday. (You boxed up your old stuff and gave it away.)

And in this case, might we suggest a particular direction for certain sorts of items?

The Azusa Unified School District, Azusa Pacific University, the Assistance Outreach League of Covina, and the Azusa/Glendora Soroptimists are working together again this year to collect gently-used prom “possible” attire to provide free formalwear to any young lady planning to attend her high school prom.

Please remember that girls attending formal dances come in all sizes and shapes so take anything that looks like it might have possibilities to the dry cleaner and then let creative minds go to work.

Bring your donations between now and the end of February to either the Azusa Unified School District Family Resource Center, 546 S. Citrus Ave. (located off of Citrus at Goldstone Street), Azusa or go to the front counter in the lobby of the Glendora Police Department, 150 S. Glendora Ave., and mention that your treasures are to go to Nita.
