According to source, Tennessee’s largest self-described Christian university has officially recognized a student group that seeks to “examine the intersection of Christian faith and LGBT related issues through group discussion.”

After having twice rejected the application of Bridge Builders, Belmont University, which severed its ties with the Tennessee Baptist Convention in 2007, confirmed the decision to accept the pro-gay “equality” group through a joint statement Friday from Belmont Provost Thomas Burns and Bridge Builders President Robbie Maris.

“This outcome represents many months of conversation, collaboration and cooperation between Belmont students, faculty and staff,” read the statement, which appeared in The Tennessean.

Belmont University Includes Sexual Orientation In Non-Discrimination Policy

According to source, Wednesday, Belmont University president Bob Fisher announced that the university’s board had amended school policy to include sexual orientation in the school’s non-discrimination clause, reports Inside Higher Ed.

Although the decision comes following a December incident in which soccer coach Lisa Howe was allegedly dismissed for revealing to her team that she is a lesbian, Fisher asserts that the change in policy is not a reaction to the public outcry surrounding Howe’s case, but a codification of the school’s longstanding, if de facto, non-discrimination policy.

In a statement given following a board meeting on Wednesday afternoon, Fisher said that the new policy would include a preamble asserting the university’s commitment to diversity.

Belmont Hires New Women’s Soccer Coach

According to source, Two months after Belmont University and women’s soccer coach Lisa Howe parted ways, the search for her replacement is over.

Heather Henson is joining the Bruins after 12 years as head coach for East Tennessee State’s women’s soccer team.

While coaching ETSU’s Lady Bucs, Henson led her team to success on the field and the classroom, boasting several conference games and the sixth highest team GPA in the nation.

The Dallas native is the sixth head women’s soccer coach in Belmont’s history.

Howe abruptly left the University in December, after revealing that her same-sex partner was pregnant. Since then, the University has amended its non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation.
