California State System get back to teaching students

According to the news – California State University is facing possible loss in state funding amounting to $1 billion. It could close 10 campuses; turn away 85 students or can eleminite financial aid for 100,000. In a situation like this, universities and colleges should consider their priority and mission. California State University is actually a teaching university while University of California Schools is research universities.

American professors’ incentives at every institution are the same. The tenure and promotion decision are based on a record of publication and not teaching. The article of James Fairweather in the Journal of Higher Education in 2005 collected the data that college professors get paid less, the more time they spend in a classroom. It is true not only for teaching universities but also for large research universities and small liberal arts colleges.

It is important that at this time California State System should get back to teaching students.
