Fresno State student body President Pedro Ramirez, the subject of controversy after he revealed he is an illegal immigrant, told student leaders Wednesday he may have to resign if he needs surgery for injuries received in a recent traffic accident.
Meanwhile, the student senate postponed indefinitely a decision to formally review Ramirez after the American Civil Liberties Union called the move an improper attempt to force him out of office.
Ramirez told members of the student senate that he is waiting to hear from his doctor about possible additional surgery on his left eye, said university spokeswoman Shirley Armbruster.
Ramirez, 22, of Tulare, sparked controversy after admitting last fall that he is an illegal immigrant. He also has drawn praise and criticism for lobbying in Washington, D.C., for the DREAM Act. The federal bill would offer a path for young people like Ramirez, who says his parents brought him across the border when he was 3, to become citizens.

Two members of the philosophy department at California State University, Fresno, have been awarded a $100,000 research grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities to promote civil discourse on religion and religious diversity in the central San Joaquin Valley.
Vincent F. Biondo, assistant professor of Western Religious Traditions, and Andrew Fiala, chairman of the philosophy department and director of Fresno State’s Ethics Center, were named in 2011-13 grants for projects involving ethics, religion and civil discourse.
Biondo and Fiala plan to present a conference in September for religious leaders and teachers on how to civilly talk about religion in public schools. A workshop for teachers on how to implement curriculum on religion in schools is planned in the summer of 2012. Both events also are geared to humanities scholars from throughout California.
The project’s goal is to educate and learn from religious leaders and teachers and to build partnerships among humanities scholars. Biondo and Fiala say they want to see the partnerships lead to the formation of scholarships for interfaith and inter-religious organizations and the development of a humanities course on “Religion in California.”
“We need to know how to work together to improve life in the Valley,” Biondo says.
The professors also plan a book for teaching about religious diversity.
Fiala wrote a 2007 book — “What Would Jesus Really Do?” — that challenges readers to take Jesus’ moral teachings and supplement them with contemporary ethical writings on current situations to get their answers.
Biondo served six months as a Fulbright Scholar in Wales in 2009. He interviewed mainly Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders to better understand how interfaith cooperation plays a role in the prevention of urban violence.
Fresno State’s College of Arts and Humanities, the Ethics Center and the School of Education also will help present the conference and workshop.
The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded a total of $23 million for projects. It was founded in 1965 as an independent agency to support research and learning in history, literature, philosophy and other areas of humanities.

California State University, Fresno will bear $28 million in losses if legislators approve Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget proposal calling for $500 million in cuts to the 23-campus CSU system.
In actuality, Fresno State will incur a reduction of $20 million as revenues of $8 million in new revenue from tuition fee increases will offset the figure.
“I wish I could report that the fiscal situation was improving. It is not. In fact, it has gotten worse,” said Fresno State President John Welty, in a statement.
He mentioned that the 2011-12 year would probably be one of the most challenging in the university’s 100-year history.
In response to the cuts, Welty announced several cost-saving actions, including hiring freezes for vacant positions, travel restrictions, limits on major purchases and enrollment and offering self-funded summer programs instead of those sponsored by the state. A more complete plan is expected by early- to mid-April.
Welty also pointed to some bright spots at an assembly before faculty and staff today during which he proclaimed an improving graduation rate, $160 million raised through the Campaign for Fresno State and millions of dollars in recent grants to support a number of university programs.
Brown’s budget proposal recommends cuts of $500 million to both the California State University and University of California systems and a reduction of $400 million to the California Community College system.

Fresno State accepting applications for spring.
California State University Fresno is a public institution that was founded in 1911.
The California State University system did not accept applications for spring 2010 due to a lack of state financial support thus barring new admissions. Now, up to 30,000 students could be added in spring throughout CSU’s 23 campuses despite a now 90-day delay in the California legislature to pass a budget and deliver funding to the state’s colleges.
Notifications of admission started going out to applicants yesterday to those who applied between Aug. 1 and midnight Sept. 27. At the end of the spring application period the CSU expects to have received about 50,000 applications.
The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun.
