According to source, While the Asian American Studies program at California State University, Northridge is thriving, students and faculty at California State University, Los Angeles are baffled by the administration’s decision to suspend their program.

On Feb. 2, students and faculty protested the suspension, which was initiated November 2010 hoping to add more names to an online petition that has gathered more than 1,300 signatures.

“People think it’s not a big issue,” said Brian de Guzman, a CSUN student. “But when the ethnic studies community looks at this program being suspended, they think, well, if it can happen to them, then it can happen to us. If (administration) suspends the program, then it lays the groundwork for oppressing other ethnic studies programs and departments.”

CSULA’s school policy, states that an academic program suspension is initiated when a program is struggling but it is not a stepping-stone toward cancellation. The period of suspension is three years, during which a program is encouraged to evaluate itself and re-apply. During the suspension, a program cannot admit any new students.

ChorSwang “Swan” Ngin, director of CSULA’s Asian and Asian American Studies program said in an e-mail that the timing of the suspension was odd because their program was up for review in December 2010.

“We had a meeting on Nov. 29, 2010, and in a room full of more than 50 faculty from all disciplines and students, pleaded with (Dean Jim Henderson) to not suspend the program,” Ngin said. “The dean was not responsive. When asked when he would make his decision he said he was going on vacation. We have no official word since then.”

While Henderson has declined to comment on the suspension, students and faculty have made their own assumptions. A lack of institutional interest, budget concerns and the trend in job-oriented education are at the top of the list.

California State University Northridge Join AIDS Walk

California State University Northridge is a public institution that was founded in 1958.

Against a gray and misty backdrop, several CSUN groups cheerfully gathered Sunday morning to participate in the 26th annual Los Angeles AIDS Walk.

California State University Northridge club members, organizers, and representatives from the Greek societies all met at the G3 parking lot on campus before the sun was up, sipping coffee and grabbing some of the free food that was provided. Tubes of toothpaste were brought by everyone to donate to those with AIDS.

After the ceremony, the walk began at 10 a.m. and the enthusiastic mass of supporters made their way down the streets of West Hollywood. Throughout the 6.2 miles of the walk, the streets were lined with a mix of cheerleaders, flamboyant men in drag, and religious protesters.

It was an exhibits held at California State University Northridge that reunites lifelong friend Sidney Randolph Maurer, and actor Allan Rich. Both are 84 years old.

They have known each other since childhood in the Prohibition Era Bronx and have not seen each other for long time.

Maurer, who lives in Atlanta, will be out here for the opening of his CSUN exhibition.

California State University Northridge Gallery Director James Sweeters described the effect on Maurer’s finished products.

“If you look closely at a number of the works, you’ll see that he uses little codes and typography in some of them. And he’s worked with a number of the musicians.”

Exhibits starts its six-week public run Wednesday at the West Gallery in the university’s Art and Design Center.
