According to source, Manhattan looked better than a team tied for last place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference until Canisius College finally woke up from its game-long slumber.

The play that boosted Canisius to a 72-63 triumph over the Jaspers on Friday night started with a missed three-pointer by Robert Goldsberry with just over four minutes left and the Golden Griffins leading by eight that led to a Manhattan fast break. Or so it thought.

Michael Alvarado nonchalantly swooped in for a layup and didn’t see Julius Coles, who pinned the shot on the glass. Djibril Coulibaly gobbled up the rebound and Chris Manhertz swatted it away into the hands of Gaby Belardo, who threw an underhanded alley-oop pass to Elton Frazier for a two-handed dunk.

The play not only ignited the crowd of 1,061 at the Koessler Center but the Golden Griffins as well. It was the first time the Griffs have swept Manhattan since the 1996-97 season, the last under John Beilein.

“The blocks were huge,” said Canisius senior forward Greg Logins. “It gave us some energy so that was real good.”

The victory coupled with Siena’s loss to Fairfield gives the Golden Griffins sole possession of sixth place in the league with one game remaining Sunday at home against Loyola (Md.) on Senior Day. Loyola defeated Niagara University at the Gallagher Center on Friday.
