According to source, Ashleigh Jones scored a game-high 25 points in a losing effort as top-seeded Allegany College of Maryland defeated Chesapeake College, 79-44, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference women’s basketball state tournament.

Jones finished with a double-double for the eighth-seeded Skipjacks, pulling down 10 rebounds. She also had three assists and two steals. Chesapeake’s Ravin Sterling scored eight points, hauled in five rebounds, dealt out three assists and had a steal.

Sophomore guard/forward Tamara Nesmith led Allegany (26-3) with 15 points in its third win in as many tries this season against Chesapeake (9-17). Chesapeake head coach Damon Nichols said Allegany’s talent and depth were just too much for the Skipjacks.

“We didn’t play aggressively enough. We came out and played lackadaisically, and you can’t do that against a team as tough as Allegany,” said Nichols. “They kind of wore us out with their 12 players against our six.”

The Trojans went on to win the state title with a 71-63 victory over second-seeded Prince George’s Community College in Sunday’s final. Allegany won the state tournament for the third time in four years.
