According to source, As time ran out on the West Chester University men’s basketball team on Wednesday, for the fifth time in as many tries, Cheyney University has defeated the rival Golden Rams in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
The Wolves’ secret? It might just be Hollinger Field House.
“It’s our home away from home,” said Cheyney’s Bruce Kennedy, who finished with 18 points on the Rams’ home floor. “Our guys feel comfortable here. When our fans, cheerleaders and band are all with us, that gives us more of a push. We play like this is our house.”
And lately it has been. The Rams haven’t defeated Cheyney at home since the 2005-06 season, when they swept the season series. Since then, West Chester is just 2-8 against the Wolves, with both wins coming on the road.
“There isn’t a secret to it,” added Kennedy. “We take this game very serious. It’s the Duke and North Carolina, the Texas and Texas A&M, that’s what this is. We’re just a couple miles down the road. This is for bragging rights and we want to win.
“It’s always a big game. And my last three years playing against them has been nothing but success.”
But West Chester didn’t fall without a fight. Although the Wolves led by double digits at times, while controlling the lead nearly the entire way, the game came down to a pair of Rams’ possessions at the end. Pulling within two with 34-seconds left, West Chester failed to tie the game with a miss and two turnovers. A lopsided contest turned nail biter is just par for the course between the two long-time adversaries.
