Columbus State purchases Downtown building

According to source,The Downtown property won’t be enough to eliminate Columbus State Community College’s space crunch, but officials say scooping up the land and building near the campus’s south entrance will give the college breathing room.

“We all know we have constraints here,” board Trustee William J. Dolan said last night at a meeting in which the trustees unanimously approved the purchase. “The half-million-dollar property will relieve pressure from an office standpoint and a parking standpoint.”

College officials have not yet decided what to do with the site, less than a half-acre at 145-149 Cleveland Ave., near Long Street. It includes a 2,786-square-foot commercial building and about 30 parking spots.

The college bought the land and building yesterday for $550,000, about $275,000 less than what it was appraised for by the county auditor. Spokesman David Wayne said the college purchased the property with money that the trustees set aside for capital improvements and land acquisitions in 2007.

New Recreation Center at Columbus State University

Columbus State University student Jonathan Bishop said he’s been using the new student recreation center ever since it opened its doors last week.

“It’s amazing, it’s got everything under one roof, you know you can go from class and then come work out with your friends, it kind of keeps you active in between sitting down, studying in the library all the time.” Said Bishop.

Even though the facility has been open for a week, C.S.U. Officials gathered for a ribbon cutting of the $26 million, 106,000 square foot facility. Construction began in 2009.

Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, Darryl Holloman, said the new center will help attract future C.S.U. students.

“You could just see their eyes just open up when they go by the pool, the rock climbing wall, so it definitely will be a recruitment tool as well as a retention tool because students will want to stay at an institution that provides them with a sense of campus life.” Said Holloman.

Holloman also said students pay $125 per semester as part of their tuition that goes towards the recreation center and over 1,000 students have already explored the facility. An alumni usage plan is in the works.

Georgia College Splits With Columbus State

According to source, The Georgia College women’s basketball team (11-3, 3-3 PBC) defeated the Columbus State University Cougars (9-5, 2-3 PBC) to even back up to .500 in conference play, 51-46.

Chimere Jordan (Gray, Ga.) had yet another double-digit game with 17 points. She also grabbed seven boards, had six steals and dished out two assists. Tammeisha Law (Athens, Ga.) scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Karisma Boykin (Carrollton, Ga.) dished out a game high seven assists to run the offense.

Sophomore point guard Ryan LeGates (Marietta, Ga.) netted a career-best 22 points, but it couldn’t help Georgia College men’s basketball (9-5, 3-3 PBC) as the Bobcats fell 67-59 at Columbus State University (7-7, 3-2 PBC) Wednesday night.

LeGates hit 7-of-17 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from the three-point line, adding five boards and three assists. Reece Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.) had 14 points of his own to join LeGates in double-digit scoring.

The team’s shooting percentages were fairly even at 43 percent (25-58) for CSU and 42 (22-52) for the Bobcats, but the Cougars cleaned up on the glass, out-rebounding GC 41-26 with a 19-9 advantage on the offensive glass. The loss ends a two-game win streak for the Bobcats.

City council and Mayoral candidates were at Columbus State University to debate on environmental issues.

The forum was held at the Elizabeth Turner Center.

Several citizens filled the room to see what the candidates had to offer for the future of the city.

Each candidate had one minute to answer each question on conservation issues.
