Drexel chosen to host Squash U.S. Open 2011

According to source, In the fall of 2011, the world’s best squash players will flock to Drexel University. U.S. Squash announced Jan. 24 that Drexel will be hosting the 2011 U.S. Open Squash Championships. The tournament will be held Oct. 1-6 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center and will feature both men’s and women’s squash. The tournament will have a grand prize of $175,000.

The event hasn’t been hosted in the City of Philadelphia for over 20 years. Drexel President John Fry, an avid squash fan, is excited about having the event held at Drexel.

“Drexel University is delighted to host the 2011 U.S. Open Squash Championships in Philadelphia, the cradle of liberty and the home of many of the game’s most storied players and historic squash venues,” Fry told DrexelDragons.com. “Drexel University is founded on equality and competitive opportunity in venues that extend beyond academics, including the frontiers of entrepreneurship, technological innovation and athletics.

“The championships will be hosted in an urban collegiate athletic facility that will attract a diverse fan-base. We are truly honored to be the host of this remarkable championship.”

The semi-finals and finals of the tournament will be broadcast on ESPN 3.
