According to source, The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team was the victim of a cold-shooting effort in a 72-56 loss to the University of Toledo Rockets here Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15, in a Mid-American Conference West Division match up in the Convocation Center. The game was televised by SportsTime Ohio.

The Eagles, now 11-7 overall and 2-2 in league play, shot just 33.9 percent from the field, hitting 21-of-62 shots and the Green and White could manage just 1-of-10 three-point attempts for 10 percent.

Meanwhile Toledo, now 12-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in MAC play, connected on 27-of-64 shots from the field for 42.2 percent and the Rockets hit a blistering 56.3 percent from beyond the arc, making 9-of-16 shots. Toledo also managed a huge 50-34 edge on the boards.

EMU was led by Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) with 13 points each while Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) and Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Marian Purcell) added 10 each. James grabbed eight rebounds while Schrock and Redditt both had six boards each.

Toledo had five players in double figures led by Melissa Goodall who turned in a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Teammates Jessica Williams scored 17 points, Yolanda Richardson scored 16, Andola Dortch added 11 and Janelle Reed-Lucas chipped in 10.

EMU Women

According to source, The start of the 2011 football season is more than seven months away, but Howell and Hartland already are preparing for an unusual opener the weekend of Aug. 25-26.

It was announced Monday that both teams will play in the Big Day Prep Showdown at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium.

Both teams will play in rematches of their 2010 openers.

For Howell, its game against Sterling Heights Stevenson will be the second in a row at EMU.

Last year, the Highlanders rolled past Stevenson 35-0.

“We accomplished what we wanted to,” Howell coach Aaron Metz said. “It put us in a big stadium and a different atmosphere. It gave our kids a little different feel for the game, not just because it was the season opener, but because it was something not everyone gets a chance to do.”

Howell and Stevenson will play on Thursday, Aug. 25, with a game time listed at 8 p.m., although last year’s game started about a half-hour late because of the length of the game that preceded it.

Hartland, which walloped Ann Arbor Skyline 64-26 last year, will take on Skyline at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26.

“For the coaches and players, it’s an experience that not everyone gets the good fortune to do,” Hartland coach Marcus Dukes said. “An opportunity like this is good for our program, because our kids get to be seen by people who might not get out to Hartland to watch them play. Maybe it will mean a little more exposure to our players.”

Both teams begin winter workouts this week, Howell on Monday and Hartland today.

“There’s barely enough time,” Dukes joked, asked about the season opener. “It’s going to be a nice target for our kids. They’re excited.”

“The ball’s rolling,” Metz said, chuckling. “We start everything this week and go from there. It’ll be here before we know it.”
