New Mexico Boys’ State teaches Eastern New Mexico University how government works

According to the news – The 64th annual New Mexico Boys’ State takes place in Portales and it because of it Fictional New Mexico state government campaigns are in the works this week at Eastern New Mexico University.

“To educate the youth of New Mexico in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of true American citizenship” is the mission statement of the program.

In 1935, the program started when the veterans of World War 1 decided the youth of America needed to learn about government. The participants of the program include the juniors who operate their own city, county and state governments throughout a one week period.

The program, which has 400 participants in past years, has a little more than high school students from across New Mexico according to Director of Activities Mike Moye. He also added that they try to relate all of the government to New Mexico as much as possible. They are looking for leaders, not in academics, but who are active socially and in their communities. This gives a lot of them a chance to show their best qualities.
