According to source, Wednesday was college football signing day across the nation, and Mason County joined in on the fun when senior offensive lineman Alex Newton signed to play for Georgetown College.
Newton might be among the newest members of the Tigers’ program, but he already has very high expectations for himself.
“Going forward I want to get in there and I want to make an impact on the team first couple years, you know, get in a spot where I can get on the field and get some playing time,” he said. “I want to play to my full potential and I want to get in there and one of my goals is to be an all-American when I go there.”
Newton represented Mason in the Best of the Bluegrass all-star game after the Royals’ 10-2 2010 season. He chose Georgetown over Campbellsville, in large part because of the Tigers’ winning tradition, he said.
“That means the world to me,” he said. “You know, Campbellsville gave me a little bit better offer, and I really just wanted to go to Georgetown because I felt more comfortable that I’d have a good winning program that I could really get in there and do everything that I needed to do, more so than Campbellsville.”
Royals coach David Buchanan also sees Newton’s chance to play for a school with three NAIA national titles as significant.
“Alex is going to a a progam that’s won multiple national championships,” Buchanan said. “They’re really, really good … I’m excited. It’s more than just getting to play college football. This is getting to be part of a very, very good football program.”
Georgetown offensive coordinator Craig Mullins, who handled Newton’s recruitment, said Newton would likely start out as a backup guard.
