According to source – Gaylord High School graduate and standout football player Billy Boyce lately signed with Greensboro (N.C.) College, a private Division III school, hoping he will compete for that beginning quarterback job as soon as he steps on campus within the fall.

Although Boyce hasn’t always taken a lot of button snaps behind center during the last handful of seasons, he favors to check out the greater positive side from the situation as opposed to possibilities he might have skipped throughout his senior high school years.

“These coaches like the variety of systems that I have played in,” Boyce said. “I have worked with pro formations, the spread offense and the single wing.”

According to source, Four students will receive $5,000 scholarships to help pay for expenses at Greensboro College next academic year thanks to a new endowment set up by a Durham-area family.

Walter and Denise Dilts Newton of Bahama are donating money to the college to benefit students who are affiliated with four United Methodist churches. Greensboro College President Lawrence Czarda announced the new scholarship at the end of today’s Founders Day celebration.

Walter Newton is vice chairman of the college’s board of trustees. His mother, Mary Hall Newton, was a 1943 graduate of the college.

Newton said the family will make gifts to the fund over the next 10 to 15 years to fully endow it. Czarda estimates it will grow to about $20,000 annually.

Czarda said the money will help increase enrollment at the college.

The Greensboro College women’s basketball team is ranked No. 17th, the highest in program history, in the D3hoops.com poll that was released Monday.

The Pride (16-0, 10-0 USA South), coming off a 65-61 win over then-No. 5 Christopher Newport on Sunday, moved up from No. 25 last week. The highest ranking a Greensboro women’s basketball team had achieved was No. 18 during the 2008-09 season.

The new WBCA/USA Today poll, in which the Pride was No. 21 last week, will be released today.

In other Pride news, post player Danielle Duncan (Ragsdale) has been named USA South player of the week for the fourth time. The junior averaged a double-double (21.7 ppg, 12.7 rpg) as Greensboro went 3-0.
