According to source – Probably the most anticipated seasons in Jackson State University football history received a jarring blow on Thursday.

After several weeks of speculation and days of waiting, JSU learned it won’t be qualified to to play its way into this year’s Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game because of poor academic performance.

Presidents and chancellors from the 10-team conference also chosen all Thursday to prohibit Southern University in the conference title game, voicing their displeasure within the poor academic standing of two of the conference’s most effective and followed football programs.

Jackson State University’s new leader Carolyn Meyers told assembled faculty and staff Monday that she envisions a school that runs leaner and cleaner.

Beginning as JSU’s 10th president, Meyers, 64, spoke about her goals for the university, saying she wants to pick out programs that excel and invest in their futures.

As for the programs with little economic or recruitment impact on JSU, Meyers said she wants to adjust those areas to today’s expectations.

“When you have a little bit, you have to be careful with how you use it,” she said referring to JSU’s allocated funds.

“What funding we have will go to areas we have that are showing improvement,” Meyers said.

Meyers said she would like to look at ways for JSU to depend less on state dollars and more on diversified revenue options, such as increased alumni support.
