At Christian college, believers of all faiths find common ground.
According to source, Every morning before school, Tewar Zeki and her mother pray together, as all observant Muslims are required to do at dawn.
Then she packs up her books and heads to Lipscomb University for a call to prayer of another sort.
Zeki is part of a small but thriving group of Muslim students who have found a home on this small Church of Christ-affiliated campus, where chapel attendance is mandatory and Bible study classes are a prerequisite for graduation.
“When I first decided I was going to attend (Lipscomb), I had friends who said, ‘You are going to make a big mistake. You are never going to be accepted,’ ” said Zeki, a freshman majoring in biology, who was drawn to Lipscomb because she hopes to attend its College of Pharmacy one day. “I had a girl tell me, ‘You don’t understand the people who go there — they will eat your soul!”
These are tense times for interfaith relations in Middle Tennessee. Protesters picket mosque construction sites. Some lawmakers are trying to ban the practice of Shariah law. A Saudi student who formerly studied English at Vanderbilt was rounded up as a suspected terrorist in Texas.

According to source, Lipscomb University celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights’ Freedom Rides on Thursday.
The celebration commemorated the group of men and women who boarded buses and traveled across state lines 50 years ago to challenge Jim Crow segregation laws.
Thursday’s event included reenactments of the sit-ins and protests of the time. Freedom Riders and Nashvillians Etta Simpson Ray and Jean Smith joined Dr. Bernard LaFayette to speak to the entire student body about that historic movement in the fight for equality.
Lipscomb University will host several more events in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the week of Jan. 17.
