According to source – Mercer University says it has an anonymous donation of $1.5 million that will endow a chair at the university’s School of Medicine.
Mercer President Bill Underwood said Tuesday the donation was presented in honor of Rufus C. Harris, who served as Mercer’s president from 1960 to 1979 and was instrumental in helping to create the medical school, which opened in 1982.

Underwood says the person chosen for the position will direct the medical school’s Center for Rural Heath and Health Disparities. He says the job will include conducting research on how to improve health care in rural areas.
Underwood desribes the donor as an admirer of Harris.

Imagine a crisp, clear Saturday in early November. There’s an air of anticipation on the Mercer campus. It’s homecoming weekend. Alumni are flocking to campus to renew acquaintances, to relive treasured memories and to cheer on the Bears. Before the game, groups of excited students, alumni and fans are gathering across campus enjoying tailgating, meeting friends old and new, and establishing traditions that will pass from generation to generation.

Mercer is playing Davidson in a contest between two of the oldest and most respected private institutions of higher learning in the South. As game time approaches, thousands crowd into a spectacular new stadium, nestled near the heart of Mercer’s beautiful campus. The contest provides an occasion to bring the Mercer and Middle Georgia communities together in common cause. As the band strikes up the Mercer fight song, the home team charges onto the field led by members of the Mercer student spirit squad.

The game proves to be a hard fought struggle among true student-athletes — young men who are a throwback to a different age — an age when college football helped prepare future leaders by teaching the virtues of teamwork, responsibility, discipline and hard work within the framework of a rigorous liberal arts education.

After more than 70 years  Mercer University is bringing back a popular sport. The school has approved plans for a football team.

Mercer University President Bill Underwood says the decision comes after years of planning. Play will begin in 2013.

In 1892 Mercer celebrated its first season of football. In 1941 they threw the ball for the last time because of the war. Underwood says Mercer is where college football in Georgia was born. The team played the University of Georgia in the state’s very first college football game in Athens.

“That same year later we played in the first game that Georgia Tech ever played in. We beat them 12 to 6. We played the University of Florida five times early on and shut them out the first five times we played them.”

Mercer plans to compete in the Division One non-scholarship Pioneer league. In the meantime they will raise money, hire a coach, and build a stadium.
