According to the news – Professor of Education Morehead State University, Dr. Edna O. Schack received a grant amounting to $102, 907 coming from National Science Foundation. The grant is for researching the pedagogical content knowledge preparation of preservice elementary teachers in mathematics through out Kentucky.
The two year project has the title Noticing Numeracy Now (N3). It is actually a collaborative research effort among MSU, University of Kentucky and Northern Kentucky University. $199,920 is the total amount funded for the three institutions.
Dr. Edna O. Schack said that teaching quality has gotten a lot of press in recent months. There is a growing body of research around critical or highly effective teaching strategies. Our research takes the approach that in order to apply effective teaching strategies; one must first be able to notice the details of a student’s mathematical thinking.
“Using brief video case studies to stimulate in-class discussion and in-depth analysis of video of their own interactions with children, our goal is to assist the participating preservice teachers to increase the specificity and hone the focus of what they notice about children’s mathematical thinking to better inform their instructional decision-making.
The module that will be going to use in the research is the module developed by Dr. Edna O. Schack, Dr. Janet Tassell of Western Kentucky University, Dr. Margaret Yoder of Eastern Kentucky University, and Dr. Sara Eisenhardt of NKU, Dr. Jonathan Thomas of NKU and ; Dr. Molly Fisher of UK. The module is based on professional literature in the areas of professional noticing and the SEAL.
