Murray to get 3G service soon, says executive

According to source, Murray appears poised to get broadband connectivity.

An aside by an AT&T official at a State of the Community breakfast on Wednesday gives reason for optimism, reports the Murray Ledger & Times and The Paducah Sun.

Asked when the city would get 3G service, AT&T regional director Sim Davenport said the faster service was coming to Calloway County soon and clarified his statement saying “early 2011.” He said the company will make an announcement when the date is set.

AT&T sponsored the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce event and Davenport said the only reason he mentioned 3G service was because Mayor Bill Wells and Murray State University have received a lot of questions about when the faster connectivity was coming.

According to source, Murray Mayor Bill Wells and Calloway County Judge-Executive Larry Elkins addressed Chamber of Commerce members Tuesday morning at the annual State of the Community breakfast.

Speaking in the Curris Center Ballroom, Wells said it was his 32nd day as mayor and he thanked city workers for being dedicated employees. He turned the microphone over to Eric Pologruto, who began duties as the new fire chief on Jan. 10. Pologruto talked about his background working for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department in Florida and choosing to apply for the job in Murray because of the time he spent here as a child visiting his grandparents.

Wells then introduced Police Chief Jeff Liles, who talked about the operations of the police department and the need for a new public safety facility. He also talked about the need for higher police salaries, saying that the department had spent a great deal of money over the years training new officers after others have left for higher paying jobs.

FLW Outdoors announced that the 2011 National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship will be hosted by Murray State University in Murray, Ky., April 7-9, on legendary Kentucky Lake.
