According to source – If the national championship game against Butler had ended in disappointment Monday night at Reliant Stadium, Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun likely might have talked more about a potential retirement.
But as the Huskies savored the thrill of being on top of the world after a 53-41 victory against Butler, there was a sense that Calhoun was more inclined to return for a 40th season on the bench of a Division I program.

According to source – Plans are in the works for a parade to honor the national champion Connecticut men’s basketball team.
Organizers say they are working with Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office and the school to find a date and time that would work for everybody.
Laura Soll, a spokeswoman for the organizers, said the route likely will be similar to UConn victory parades in years past, starting and ending at the state Capitol.
UConn, which was picked to finish 10th in the Big East in the preseason, completed a remarkable 11-0 run through the postseason on Monday with a 53-41 win against Butler in the national championship game.

According to source – Sophomore Darnell Sweeney went on a roller coaster ride in the final two innings Tuesday. After committing an error at shortstop that led to No. 4 Florida breaking a 2-2 tie in the eighth, Sweeney quickly redeemed himself in the ninth by lining a two-out, two-run double to center to give UCF (20-9) a 4-3 victory in Gainesville.
“It was such a big win for us because we were able to bounce back (after the Southern Miss series). Every time we lose we find a way to come back in the next game and play really hard,” said Sweeney. “You have to get that big hit and that’s what we did today, we got the big hit and came out with a win.”

According to source – Jake Barrett scattered four hits over his seven innings of work, leading No. 5 Arizona State to an 8-0 victory over Oregon and a three-game weekend sweep. Barrett fanned six, while Zack MacPhee paced the Sun Devil offense with his three hits, helping ASU improve to 21-6 on the year, 5-1 in Pac-10 play.
The Devils would strike early and often against the Ducks. In the bottom of the first inning Joey DeMichele hit a groundball to first base that drove in Zack MacPhee from third. Two batters later, Zach Wilson singled to left field driving in Riccio Torrez from second base to make it 2-0. Johnny Ruettiger’s sacrifice fly in the second made it 3-0 after two.

“My job as a coach is to get them all together on the same page and demand that they play together, demand that they defend together, demand they play with toughness, and not accept anything less than that,” Calipari said during Kentucky’s open practice on Friday.

According to source – Washington guard Isaiah Thomas announced Thursday he’s forgoing his senior season with the Huskies and entering the NBA draft and will not return to school no matter what happens.
Thomas has yet to hire an agent, but at the beginning of a conference call with reporters said, “yes, it is a goodbye.”
It was a surprising decision by the junior, who in the moments after the Huskies lost to North Carolina in the third round of the NCAA tournament indicated he planned to return for his final season on Montlake.
Instead, the talented, undersized guard is going to take his shot at the next level. Thomas said it doesn’t matter what the NBA talent evaluators say.

Barnes was 141-109 during his eight seasons as head coach of the Rebels, including consecutive 20-win seasons in 1997 and 1998.

According to source -
Arizona
• In 1922, the entire male population of the Arizona student body received a 10-day suspension for playing leapfrog over the beds of the unmarried men on the faculty. The suspension was lifted after two days because there were not enough students left to continue classes.
Butler
• When it lost to Duke in the 2010 title game, Butler was the smallest school (enrollment: 4,500) to play for the national championship since the field expanded in 1985. The Bulldogs were already credited with two collegiate national championships. The 1923-24 Bulldogs took the first by winning the AAU National Tournament in Kansas City, defeating Schooley-Woodstock (34-29), Hillyards (35-29), Kansas State Teachers (40-21) and Kansas City Athletic Club (30-26), while the 1928-29 squad was recognized as the collegiate national champion by the Veteran Athletes of Philadelphia.
BYU
• BYU became the first U.S. college basketball program to include an international player on its roster, as Finland native Timo Lampen debuted in the 1958-59 season. Later, Kresimir Cosic, born in Yugoslavia, became the first international player to be named an All-American.
Connecticut
• The Husky has not always been the mascot for Connecticut athletics. Before 1933, the school went by the Aggies for its agricultural background, and it changed to Statesmen for a year until 1934 when the Husky mascot took hold. All of the live Husky mascots are named Jonathan, with the most current being Jonathan XIII who was selected by the students in a popular vote.

According to source – Kemba Walker sliced up San Diego State’s defense for 22 points on shots from all angles and distances in the second half of Connecticut’s West regional semifinal.
The Aztecs only kept him down once: A shoulder bump from Jamaal Franklin sent Walker crashing to the Honda Center floor, drawing a technical foul and two momentum-killing free throws.
Walker denied doing any acting on the play. He’s still the star of these resilient Huskies’ remarkable production.
Walker scored 36 points in yet another dynamic postseason performance, driving UConn down the stretch Thursday night to a 74-67 victory that put the Huskies on the brink of another Final Four.
“I’m just trying to do the best I can do,” said Walker, who scored 12 straight points for UConn in the final minutes. “Whether it’s scoring, talking, getting their confidence up or giving an assist, I’m just trying to do whatever is possible to enhance this team.”
Freshman Jeremy Lamb added a season-high 24 points and hit a clutch 3-pointer with 1:43 left for the third-seeded Huskies (29-9), who are headed to an NCAA regional final for the 10th time after beating the Aztecs and a building full of hostile fans just 90 minutes from San Diego.

According to source – Alex Tyus is like most of these Florida Gators—good at a lot of things, but lacking one dominant skill. He’s usually content to blend in and be just another part of the team’s effectively anonymous style.
On the biggest stage of his career, the senior’s impact was obvious.
Tyus had 19 points and 17 rebounds as Florida beat BYU 83-74 in overtime Thursday night, chasing a bloodied Jimmer Fredette and the Cougars out of the NCAA tournament.
Now the Gators will be playing for a spot in the Final Four for the first time since 2007—ascending back into the nation’s elite after a hiatus from the spotlight following back-to-back national championships in 2006 and ’07.
“It’s been so rewarding for me to see them make the journey they’ve made to this point now,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. “It’s been very, very rewarding and fulfilling for me, and I hope in some way I’ve been able to give them as much as they’ve given me.”
While Fredette was the star attraction, scoring 32 points on 11 for 29 shooting in the final game of his college career, Florida countered with balance.
Kenny Boynton added 17 points—while also playing tight defense on Fredette — and Erving Walker and Chandler Parsons both scored 16. Boynton and Parsons each hit 3-pointers in overtime as Florida outscored BYU 15-6.
But it was Tyus’ monster game that put the Gators over the top. The 6-foot-8 senior is the team’s fifth-leading scorer, averaging 8.6 points and 5.7 rebounds coming into the game.
“The thing about Alex is he never really gets fazed with the moment or with what’s going on,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. “One of the things I’ve tried to pull out of him and get him to see is that when he has a lot of activity and he’s flying around the court, because of his athleticism, he’s got a great ability to impact a game.”
While Tyus was battling under the basket, Boynton was glued to Fredette on defense the entire game.

According to source – Derrick Williams scored a career-high 32 points and his Arizona teammates showed they’re not just a one-man team, upsetting defending national champion Duke 93-77 Thursday night to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 2005.
The top-seeded Blue Devils (32-5) were sent packing from a regional semifinal for the second time in three years. Coach Mike Krzyzewski, with 900 wins, will have to wait until next season to resume his pursuit of Bob Knight’s record as the winningest men’s coach in Division I history.
Williams scored 25 of his points in the first half before his teammates came up big in the final 20 minutes. Lamont Jones added 16 points and Solomon Hill 13.
Williams had 13 rebounds to help his team dominate the boards, 40-27, while playing 15 minutes from his hometown of La Mirada.
Fifth-seeded Arizona (30-7) will play Connecticut (29-9) on Saturday in the West Regional final. The third-seeded Huskies defeated No. 2 San Diego State 74-67 in the other semifinal.
Duke’s Kryie Irving scored 28 points in his most minutes since returning at the start of the NCAA tournament after missing 26 games with a toe injury. Kyle Singler added 18 as one of three Blue Devils in second-half foul trouble. Nolan Smith was held to eight points — well under the senior’s 21-point average.
Down by six points early in the second half, the Wildcats unleashed a scoring rampage that left the Blue Devils looking stunned.

According to source – Somehow, some way, Nick Martini keeps getting on base.
Kansas State’s junior left fielder goes into this weekend’s series at Baylor having reached base in a nation-leading 79 consecutive games.
“I’d probably be lying if I told you it wasn’t something I thought about, just because it’s going on,” Martini said. “I try not to be selfish. I’ll do whatever it takes to get on base.”
The 2010 Big 12 player of the year leads the Wildcats with a .358 batting average and .482 on-base percentage.
Martini kept his streak alive through three losses at Texas last week. He was 2 for 12 in the series and went hitless the first two games. But he reached on an error and walk on Friday and was hit on the hand by a pitch in his second plate appearance Saturday.
“That one was kind of tough because it hurt,” Martini said.
Martini’s streak started in the final game of 2009. In 67 of the 79 games, he’s extended it with a hit.
“Obviously, the league we play in makes it even more exceptional because of some of the guys we’re seeing on weekends,” K-State coach Brad Hill said. “The quality of pitching is some of the best in the country.”
The NCAA doesn’t track consecutive games on base. According to K-State baseball publicist Ryan Lackey’s research, Elon’s Cory Harrilchak owns the longest Division I streak for reaching base — 86 games over the 2008-09 seasons.
Martini’s streak is by far the longest active one. Florida International’s Garrett Wittels, whose run at the longest hitting streak in NCAA history ended at 56 games in February, reached base in 75 consecutive games before last Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Florida Atlantic.
Other on-base streaks that ended last weekend were those by Kennesaw State’s Ronnie Freeman (49 games) and Georgia Southern’s Shawn Payne (47).
The left handed-batting Martini has just eight career home runs. But he’s a dangerous offensive player in this new era of toned-down bats.

According to source – Richy Pedroza and Joe Terry had 2 hits and Nick Ramirez and Austin Kingsolver each drove in 2 runs as No. 13 Cal State Fullerton upended No. 6 Arizona State 7-3 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Goodwin Field.
Jake Floethe (2-1) allowed 2 runs on 4 hits over 7.1 innings of work to get the win with Ryan Ackland and Nick Ramirez finishing up the final 1.2 in relief. The Titans improve to 12-7 with their fourth straight win, all coming over Pac-10 opponents.
Arizona State starter Jake Barrett (1-2) lasted just 3.1 innings giving up 7 runs on 7 hits to suffer the loss. Relievers Mark Lambson and Josh Moody held the Titans to just 4 hits over the final 4.2 innings.
Ramirez gave the Titans the lead for good in his first inning at bat, delivering a two-run single scoring Richy Pedroza and Anthony Trajano from second and third. After an ASU run in the top of the second, Fullerton bounced back for a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1. Austin Kingsolver picked up the RBI with a single to center.
In the fourth, Tyler Pill was hit by Barrett and Michael Lorenzen doubled him to third. Joe Terry drove home Pill with a fly ball to right. A hit batter later, Jared Deacon delivered a run-scoring single and then Kingsolver grounded out to bring the fourth run of the inning home, making it 7-1.
The Sun Devils tacked on a run in the eighth and ninth to make things interesting for Ramirez who came on with the tying run in the hole.
A base hit, a fielder’s choice and a walk in the eighth brought Floethe’s night to an end. Ackland walked the first batter he faced and Riccio Torrez’s fielder’s choice grounder to second brought home ASU’s second run of the night.

According to source – Providence has hired former Fairfield coach Ed Cooley to replace the fired Keno Davis.
Cooley, who led the Stags to a school-record 25 wins and a MAAC regular-season championship this year, coached his final game at Fairfield on Sunday, a 72-68 loss to Kent State in the second round of the NIT.
“We are very excited to have Ed Cooley coming to Providence College,” Father Brian Shanley, Providence’s president, said. “I have had the opportunity to spend some time with Ed, and I believe he is the right person to lead our men’s basketball team. We conducted a thorough search, and during that process, Ed Cooley was the coach that consistently met our selection criteria.”
Cooley was named the coach of the year in the MAAC this season, and the Stags (25-8) were on their way to the NCAA tournament automatic bid, when they were upset by St. Peter’s 62-48 in the league tournament semifinals.
A Providence native, Cooley left an assistant job at Boston College to take the Fairfield position in April of 2006. He struggled in Year 1, going just 13-19. But his final three seasons were all above-.500, and he finished with a 92-69 record. He won 60 conference games and landed in postseason play his final two seasons with the Stags.
“Ed Cooley did a great job rebuilding Fairfield into a consistently strong program,” athletic director Bob Driscoll said. “Each season, his team showed improvement, and the win totals increased. Throughout this process, he used hard work and dedication, and that is part of what makes him a good fit for Providence College. I saw knowledge, passion and commitment that is necessary to lead our men’s basketball program.”

According to source – Mike Anderson is returning to Arkansas to become the Razorbacks’ basketball coach.
The school confirmed the move on Wednesday night.
Anderson leaves Missouri after five seasons to return to the school where he was an assistant to Nolan Richardson for 17 seasons. He replaces John Pelphrey, who was fired on March 13.
“Under Mike’s leadership, I am confident the Razorbacks will be successful in the future on and off the court,” Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement. “The decision to hire Mike Anderson as head coach is based on my firm belief that he is the right person to lead the Razorback program today and in the years to come.”
Anderson’s departure is certain to anger Missouri fans who just six days earlier were assured by the Tigers’ coach that “I’m excited about what’s taking place at Missouri, and I plan on being at Missouri.” But they had also grown accustomed to previous flirtations—Anderson turned down $2 million offers and both the Georgia job in 2009 and Oregon one year later.
But the hard feelings felt by Missouri fans over Anderson’s departure were nowhere to be found inside Mizzou Arena at a news conference on Wednesday night. Less than 2 hours after a team meeting with Anderson, athletic director Mike Alden repeatedly praised the coach for restoring the national success of a program that rose to prominence under longtime coach Norm Stewart but faltered under Anderson’s predecessor, Quin Snyder.
“We’ve been blessed that he has been with us for the past five years,” Alden said at a hastily arranged news conference. “We wish him nothing but the best.”

According to source – Sunday is the first day of a new week, but it was also the end of a long week for the fourth-ranked Florida State baseball team.
Playing their fourth consecutive extra-inning game, the fourth-ranked Seminoles got a leadoff homer from Rafael Lopez in the top of the 10th inning and Mike McGee made it stand up in a wild 12-11 victory against No. 5 Virginia.
The Seminoles (16-4, 4-2 ACC) avoided a series sweep by registering their 23rd consecutive Sunday victory, dating to their 2009 ACC Tournament championship game loss to the Cavaliers (19-2, 5-1). In the process, FSU stopped Virginia’s 13-game winning streak, which included a pair of extra-inning triumphs over the `Noles on Friday and Saturday.
It was the fifth consecutive one-run game involving the Seminoles.
On a day when FSU coach Mike Martin shuffled his lineup in an effort to avoid the series sweep, James Ramsey drove in a career-high five runs and Lopez knocked in three more.
McGee, who suffered a quadriceps strain in Friday’s series opener, earned the win with two innings of relief. He finished off the victory by striking out series-long nemesis Steven Proscia with the tying run at second base in the home half of the 10th.
Virginia’s offense kicked in quickly in the first inning. With one out John Barr rallied from a 1-2 count to coax a walk. He stole second and Hicks followed with a walk. Danny Hultzen then took a 3-2 pitch to right field for a single to score Barr and advance Hicks to second, and Proscia ripped a single through the hole at shortstop to bring Hicks around to score.
