According to source – New Mexico State University was ranked among the best 100 players undergraduate degree producers in four groups by Diverse: Issues in Greater Education magazine within their June 9 edition.

Within the American Indian Bachelor’s-All Disciplines Combined category, NMSU rated 18th, an 8 percent rise in total levels granted from the year before.

According to source, Michael Cheney, a Las Cruces bank executive, was appointed Tuesday to New Mexico State University’s governing board, announced Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

Cheney, 48, is the regional president for Wells Fargo & Co. in southern New Mexico. He’ll fill a vacancy created when the term of former Regent Blake Curtis expired in December.

The appointment was the second to the NMSU board in as many days, following the announcement of Christopher Dulany as student regent. Both must be confirmed by the state Senate.
Cheney, a Republican, graduated in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in finance from NMSU. He’s also served on an NMSU Business College advisory panel and the board of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce.

Las Cruces real estate firm owner and agent John Hummer serves with Cheney on the Chamber of Commerce board. He said that body has benefited from Cheney’s experience.
“He’s just somebody whose opinions and insights are always very well-received,” said Hummer, the division chair for government affairs within the chamber. “I consider him somebody who’s very honest, with high ethics, and just a good person to know and be around. I don’t think the governor could have done any better.”

Hummer said Cheney’s skills in finance and management will be assets to the university.

Cheney, if confirmed, will serve a six-year term on the Board of Regents. The five-member body sets policy for the university and hires and fires its president.
