THIBODAUX — As Sharon Brown’s daughter Brittany was walking out of the Stopher Gymnasium at Nicholls State University Saturday, she wouldn’t stop and pose for a photo with her degree. Sharon Brown tried to get a quick picture with her iPhone, but her daughter smiled, sort of embarrassed, and just kept walking.
“She had told me, ‘Mom, it’s not a big deal. Wait till I get my master’s,’” Sharon Brown said. She said her daughter was going to LSU in the fall to study social work.
Brittany Brown was just one of the 635 students receiving a degree at Nicholls this semester, the 87th commencent ceremony for the Thibodaux university. Included in the tally were 55 students who received a master’s degree, and one student was given a doctorate in commerce.
“All these years of hard work go by so fast,” said Nicholls President Stephen Hulbert.
During Saturday’s ceremony, a scream, a foghorn or a quick round of applause rang out each time a student crossed the stage and received a degree.
In many families, relatives were more excited than the students.
“I’m pretty proud for all (my daughter) has accomplished,” said Josh Tanner, whose daughter, Jacey Tanner, graduated with a degree in arts and sciences.
Some students said they already had jobs lined up for after graduation. Amanda Rhodes graduated with a degree in elementary education, and will be teaching kindergarten in January.
“It’s overwhelming,” Rhodes said about graduation. “It feels surreal that I made it.”
Others said they were relieved that it’s all over.
“After four years of hard work, it’s good knowing you can go out in the work force and have fun,” said Timmy Authement, who graduated with a computer science degree. Authement said he is excited to move away, possibly to Lafayette or to New Orleans.

Nicholls State University, founded in 1948, is a public university located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, USA.
Faced with the possibility of a $10.8 million cut that school officials say would cripple Nicholls State University.
The word spread quickly, through Facebook pages and e-mails, by word-of-mouth on the campus and even through telephone, about the potential for disaster at Nicholls State University.
So when news spread that the university is facing a crisis, begins to rally the campus at town-hall events, and administration officials bluntly admit the university could offer only a fraction of its degree programs, the community should take notice.
The effect would be devastating, disassembling Nicholls and stripping the educational and economic fabric of south Louisiana. The work of 62 years, which has correlated with the prominent educational institute Nicholls has become, will be destroyed.
Nicholls administrators were told to prepare for a cut of $3.4 million in state dollars and another $7.4 million in federal-stimulus dollars.
