According to source – The Department of Architecture at Portland State University proudly announces its inaugural lecture series, titled ‘Firsts.’ The series spans the 2011-2012 academic year, beginning October 6, with presentations by six notable academics, artists and professionals in architectural practice worldwide: Petra Kempf, John Ochsendorf, Gilles Saucier, Jeremy Till, Sarah Wigglesworth and Paul Pfeiffer.

The ideas of origins and beginnings, long a subject of interest among architects, will be explored through the entire series of lectures. As the Greek word Arche (meaning ‘first cause’) is at the root of the word architecture, the guest lecturers will explain their own ‘first causes’-the spark that led them to follow their career path-as part of their presentations. The lectures in the series begin at 7pm in the Shattuck Hall Annex at Portland State University (at SW Broadway and Hall Streets) and are free to the public.

So why do students quit college when they’re within a quarter, or in some instances one credit, of the degree?

A husband at war, an hurt mother, an opportunity to play professional football -numerous distractions bump students near graduation from crossing the finishing line, Portland State University administrators have found.

Inside a unique new program known as The Last Mile, the brainchild of Robert Mercer, assistant dean from the college of liberal arts and sciences, PSU this season found a lot more than 250 of those students.

Mercer enlisted Sukhwant Jhaj, special assistant towards the provost for student success, along with other volunteer faculty and staff to assist a lot more than 100 of them finish. Most were within 15 credits of completion. Some were just one credit away.

According to source, Portland Mayor Sam Adams’ annual State of the City speech today will focus on new business, equity and education initiatives.

Among Adams proposals are a scaled-back downtown urban renewal district focused on redevelopment surrounding Portland State University, a business-license tax credit for companies that help with education efforts and creation of investment districts aimed at job creation in five financially challenged areas.

Adams also is expected to name a new executive director for Portland’s urban renewal agency and a fifth focus area for public investment tied to jobs: research and commercialization.

Other initiatives Adams will propose include a new governmental arm called the Office of Equity and an initiative to explore ways to make grocery stores financially feasible in undeserved areas such as Cully or Lents.

Portland State University hosts forum on “The Future of Higher Education in Oregon”

Portland State University (PSU) and the Oregon University System are hosting a public forum to discuss the “Future of Higher Education in Oregon” on Feb. 8. This is the first opportunity for OUS students and faculty to ask direct questions about the proposed restructuring of Oregon’s higher education system.

Panelists representing students, staff, administration, and the Oregon Legislature will discuss the proposals and answer questions from the audience. Peter Bhatia, editor of The Oregonian, will serve as moderator.

Over the past two decades, Oregon has steadily shifted more responsibility for funding its universities from the state to students through tuition and fees. At PSU, the state’s share of total support dropped from 35 percent in 1994-95 to 12.8 percent in 2010-11. As a result, Oregon is among the states spending the least amount per student for higher education and among those with the highest level of state control.

The Oregon Legislature is debating whether to give the campuses more control over their finances and their futures by restructuring the state university system.

Under the proposal, PSU and Oregon’s other public universities would receive state funding in the same way as community colleges and public schools: in a lump sum contingent on annual performance targets and progress reports to the Legislature—oversight that presently is not required of the university system.

Panel participants are PSU President Wim Wiewel; George Pernsteiner, chancellor of the Oregon University System; Maude Hines, PSU English faculty and presiding officer of the Faculty Senate; Katie Markey, president of the Associated Students of PSU; and an Oregon Legislator.

The forum is at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 8 in Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom, room 355, 1825 SW Broadway, Portland.
