Purdue University: Demand shocks help drive food, commodity prices

A new report from Purdue University scientists and Farm Foundation, NFP shows emerging trends which make 2010 dramatic rise in food and commodity prices not the same as the increases observed in 2008. But as with 2008, there’s not one or simple cause, with plenty of domestic and worldwide factors adding.

Two “demand shocks” – corn employed for ethanol and China’s imports of soybeans – play key roles within this year’s market trends, based on the report, entitled “What’s driving food prices this year?”

Farm Foundation, NFP commissioned Purdue economists to organize the report, which follows similar analysis they carried out in 2009 and 2008. The authors recognized five important aspects in shaping today’s price story.

Purdue University is on a fast track to making progress in its strategic plan but is still lagging behind peers in some key spots.

Undergraduate one-year retention rate, U.S. News & World Report rankings, number of faculty in national academies and number of U.S. patents issued were areas that saw gains against peer universities, Rab Mukerjea, director of strategic planning and assessment, said Saturday.

“In a nutshell, looking ahead we can see the future in cross hairs among the top 15 publics and top 50 nationals,” he said, referring to the U.S. News & World Report rankings. “And this will remain in our focus — and given the major markers, this is in focus. This is not fuzzy.”

Mukerjea gave an overview of benchmarks used to gauge the success of the university strategic plan during the past year at Saturday’s board of trustees meeting.

Purdue professor elected to Institute of Medicine.

A Purdue University professor has been elected to the Institute of Medicine, which is the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

Connie Weaver, a distinguished professor and head of Department of Foods and Nutrition, is one of the 65 new members and five foreign associates announced this morning at the institute’s 40th annual meeting.

Weaver is an expert in mineral bioavailability, calcium metabolism and bone health.
