According to source, Since 1976, February has been designated as Black History Month — a time to celebrate black American life and history — the good and bad. Over the years, my focus has shifted from national subjects to more local ones.

This year, Beverly Elaine Hall-Nelson is one of my black history-makers — for the subtle but meaningful contributions she made to Saint Leo College in the early 1970s.

Beverly was raised in Dade City’s Moore-Mickens subdivision and graduated from Pasco High School in 1971. Instead of attending one of the state’s two popular black colleges — Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University in Tallahassee or Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach — she opted to attend Saint Leo College, a Catholic school where our paths crossed in 1972.

Saint Leo College Dating

“FORGET the boys being back in town, last Friday it was all about the girls.”

St Leo’s old girls meet up to reel in the years.

Seventy past pupils of St Leo’s College turned out in style at the Seven Oaks Hotel on Friday for the first ever 20-year reunion.

Organised by past pupil Siobhan Doyle, the night proved a great success with festivities continuing until the small hours.

There was plenty of reminiscing thrown in, with all the catching up as some of the women had lost touch over the years.

Women from the six leaving cert classes of 1989-1991 turned out in their droves, prompting the hotel to call it their biggest school reunion ever.

There’s already talk of another reunion at Christmas.
