According to source, Two St. Thomas Aquinas High School girls soccer standouts signed National Letters of Intent to top Division I colleges on Tuesday.

St. Thomas senior Michaela Cowgill, of Portsmouth, will attend American University in Washington, D.C. Classmate Cara Richard, of Rye, will attend the University of Michigan. Both helped the Saints win the Class I championship in 2009.

Cowgill was a Division II first-team selection with 12 goals and 10 assists for the Saints last season. She earned All-State honors during her sophomore, junior and senior years and was named a top-20 regionally ranked recruit by Top Drawer Soccer. Cowgill also plays club soccer for Seacoast United.

“Michaela carried the team on her back,” STA coach Gary Karibian said. “She’d get the ball in our own end and beat four or five players with ease.”

Cowgill is one of seven newcomers that American University women’s soccer coach David Bucciero will welcome to the Eagles program this fall.

“Michaela will be able to help us in both the back and midfield due to her ability to play in both spots,” said Bucciero. “She is technically fantastic, passionate about soccer, and will add a positive mentality to our team.”

Richard will be a second generation Michigan Wolverine, joining both her mother and father. Her father, Dan, wrestled for Michigan in 1978. Cara Richard was a Division II second-team selection with 14 goals and nine assists for the Saints last season. A member of the Seacoast United Premier, she was invited to the 2008 and 2009 Super Y League National Camp.

“In my opinion, she’s one of the better players in the state,” Karibian said. “She’s always confident on the ball, and her field awareness is amazing.”

Michigan coach Greg Ryan also commented on Cara’s abilities.

According to source, A leader is an individual with a dream and the will to make it real. That is the credo of Biscayne College of Liberal Arts and Humanities of Miami’s St. Thomas University. And its Counseling faculty keeps proactively offering a forum to individuals who contribute to transforming the world and helping those in need.

February 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM (Kennedy Building, Room 201), St. Thomas and Miami-based non-profit FACES (Foundation Advancing Cultural and Economic Survival) are co-hosting a rare visit from a member of one of the world’s oldest cultures, the Tuareg, an ancient nomadic people known as the “Blue People of the Sahara,” now on the verge of extinction due to severe droughts, disease, famine, and government neglect. Recent al Qaeda terrorist activity in northern Mali is creating even more economic instability in the region. Westerners have been targeted and the U.S. government has issued a travel warning for Mali.

Monsignor Casale initiated the press conference introducing three student panelists who represent what the Dream Act is all about: Miyen Spinelli, the STU student who was recently granted a stay of deportation, Diego Sanchez, treasurer of the St. Thomas Student Government Association and past core leader of Students Working for Equal Rights and Felipe Matos, a former core leader of Students Working for Equal Rights and participant in the Trail of Dreams.

As the President recounted “Friday evening, November 19th, one of our students, a member of the men’s soccer team, was driving independently from the team to Maine for the qualifying round of the soccer national championships. He was stopped and detained by the United States Border Patrol for not having documentation for his legal presence in the United States.”

“The university and our students, especially members of SWER (Students Working for Equal Rights), have long been involved in organizations and efforts to have the Dream Act passed. The Dream Act awards legal immigration status to students who were brought here as youngsters without proper papers. I personally have supported the Dream Act for many years. I can assure you that most of my colleagues, presidents of the colleges and universities of the United States support the Dream Act as well. For me and St. Thomas University the issue became extremely personal from the day that Miyen was detained. I can tell you the reaction of our community was similar to that of death on campus. There were questions — Will we see our friend, our student and teammate again before he is deported, what will he be deported to, what about graduating form college and what about the rest of his life? Thank God he is with us now.”
