Salem College

According to source – Salem College has named Susan Calovini since it’s new dean and v . p . for academic and student matters,according to an announcement.

Calovini succeeds Ann McElaney-Johnson, who was recent named president of Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, which like Salem is a college for women.

Calovini was dean from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Evansville in Indiana, and before that held several positions at Austin Peay Condition College in Tennessee.

Salem County Junior Red Cross Youth Day

The Salem County Junior Red Cross will hold its third Youth Day event on Feb. 5 at Salem Community College here.

This year’s event, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, will be the “Field House Fun Day.” This fundraising event will be a combination of carnival fun and field day activities.

The Philly Phanatic will be making a surprise appearance during the event.

In addition, there will be sports demonstrations, including tips on soccer and hockey.

A variety of booths will be open throughout the entire event. Other booths include balloon animals, lollipop tree, face painting, a dance competition, funny photos, karaoke, sand art, temporary tattoos, and hair extensions and streaks.

In addition, there will be informational booths on various Red Cross services, including blood donation, disaster preparedness and response, and health and safety. Current Junior Red Cross members are helping to run an informational booth about the Junior Red Cross and its programs.

Other scheduled events include an Around-the-World basketball game, an Olympics competition, a hula hoop contest and a crab soccer game.

There will be a snack stand with treats available that are included in the cost of admission, as well as another concession stand with addition food for a nominal fee. There will be prizes and giveaways as well.

This is a great family event, so parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the fun.

Each Fun Day participant must raise or donate a minimum of $20 to participate or $30 as a family (two or more children with parents).

The cost is inclusive of all the events and activities. Funds will be collected during registration at the event. A sponsor sheet can be printed out at the website www.arc-salem.org.

No children will be admitted without a parent or guardian in attendance with them.

Anyone raising $100 or more in sponsorships will have the chance to toss three cream pies at Joyce Skradzinski, executive director for the Salem County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Registration is available the day of the event, but pre-registration is encouraged. Pre-registered families are required to prepay the minimum admittance charge. Credit cards payments will only be accepted until Jan. 28.

The only forms of payment accepted at the door will be cash, money order or personal check. Families who pre-register will be admitted into the event faster than those who do not pre-register.

Those who pre-register before Jan. 28 will receive a complimentary Red Cross wrist band. Registration the day of the event begins at 9 a.m.

Youth can also find out all the exciting events and activities they can be a part of as a member of the Junior Red Cross. The Junior Red Cross, open to youth of all ages, meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Friends Home in Woodstown. Each meeting includes information, fun and friends.

Covenant Women Hold Off Salem College

According to source, It only took one try in 2011 for the Lady Scots to come up with a win, and the team did so by holding onto a late lead on the road at Salem College (2-6, 1-2 GSAC) Thursday night. Covenant, who defeated the host Spirits by a score of 65-57, improves to 1-6 on the season. Kiaira Cooper (15), Jessie Blankenship (13), and Ruth Gibson (10) all tallied double figures, and Hannah Craft’s 10 rebounds were sure to have played their part in the big win.

During the bulk of the opening half, the lead changed, players made baskets that tied the game up, and momentum swung between the two teams, but Cooper’s mid-range jumper with just under 6 minutes left gave the Lady Scots a 9 point lead, the largest of the half by either side. The lead went up to as many as 11 before the break, but thanks to a late 3-pointer from Spirit guard LaSashia Connelly, Salem managed to cut their deficit to 8 (31-23) as the teams headed to the locker room.

The Lady Scots held the lead throughout the entire second half, never allowing it to drop below 6. Made free throws and rebounding told the tale as Salem fell at home for the first time this season. Covenant cashed in 15 of its 24 free throws and out-rebounded the Spirits 17-10 in the second half. In fact, Salem earned no second chance opportunities in the second half (and only 4 all game) as the Lady Scots grabbed every single missed shot of the defensive end.
