According to source – Though the San Diego Sports Club’s claim to fame might be the five dollar Long Island, this happenin’ little venue is also home to a ridiculous happy hour that runs from noon to six in the evening. With a lengthy list of beverages to choose from, you might want to think about preparing a cab for your ride home. Yet, it’s hard to even consider leaving when this “sports” club really starts rocking. This bar has been known to host some of the best local music around town and if you’re a musician looking for a stage, the San Diego Sports Club has a generous space for all displays of talent. From the electric disc jockeys to the acoustic guitar wailers, all shapes, sizes and sounds are usually welcome.

Meet the Moxies behind San Diego Moxie Theatre at premiere of ‘Toughest Girl Alive

If you’re a theater-lover, there’s a small mall near San Diego State University that’s definitely worth the trip. For the past year, it’s been home to Moxie, a 132-seat nonprofit theater that consistently presents some of the hottest shows around.

The secret to its success is a quartet of gifted women who founded the theater six years ago: Artistic Director Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, Managing Director Jo Anne Glover, Associate Artistic Director Jennifer Eve Thorn and Liv Kellgren.

The plays they present are edgy ones, often written by female playwrights, with wild and wonderful roles for female performers.
This doesn’t mean men are excluded from Moxie. Helpful husbands and kid-friendly meetings are part of the lifestyle. In fact, Moxie is like one big, close, collaborative family — the kind you really wish you had.

“You don’t have to choose between being an artist and being a parent,” said Sonnenberg, a mother of two whose husband is a scenic designer and whose 8-year-old daughter, Zoe, made her stage debut in “Eurydice” in 2010 — directed by mom.

“Someone in the company will always step forward so we all get to do what we love,” Thorn said. (Her two kids, ages 1 and 3, are used to taking meetings.) “People leave here at night and hug us and help take the trash out.”

Glover agreed. “We have a pretty strong community,” she said. “We help each other out so everyone can perform.”

SDSU taking Michigan to the bank with Hoke

The University of Michigan ransacked San Diego State’s football coaching staff this week by hiring the Aztecs head coach and several of his assistants.

So what can the Aztecs do about it?

They can sit back and count the money. Then they can aim for payback of a different sort on Sept. 24.

The Wolverines now owe the Aztecs $2 million for two separate $1 million transactions. It’s an infusion of cash that may help SDSU pull out of a deficit that led to department layoffs and other cost-cutting measures this past year.

The first check is expected to come within 60 days. Michigan will pay SDSU $1 million to buy out the three remaining years on head coach Brady Hoke’s contract at SDSU. Hoke was hired by Michigan Tuesday.

“I had inherited some deficits I had to take care of so that will help us with that,” SDSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk said.

The next $1 million is due within a few months after SDSU plays at Michigan on Sept. 24. Michigan agreed to pay $1,016,800 for SDSU to play the game in Ann Arbor. “That will be a fun one,” Sterk said.

The Aztecs finished their last fiscal year, which ended June 30, with a $1.5 million deficit that had been carried over from the previous year. Last June, Sterk said it would use a university loan to bridge that gap. That loan was secured by the scheduled payday from the Sept. 24 game at Michigan.

Nearly half of SDSU’s $32 million athletic revenues still come from subsidies: student fees, state funds and other university sources.

San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School.

A young San Diego State University finance professor has been awarded a prestigious fellowship by the European Central Bank.

Kuntara Pukthuanthong is one of five worldwide winners of this year’s Lamfalussy Fellowships, which are granted to researchers under age 36. The fellowships are named for Baron Alexandre Lamfalussy, the first president of the European Monetary Institute. The award comes with a €10,000 (about $14,000) honorarium.

Pukthuanthong’s application centered on a project she is working on with a senior UCLA professor analyzing about 60 worldwide markets, ranging from the most developed to nascent frontier markets.

San Diego State University is hiring a new head coach for its new women’s lacrosse team. They hire Kylee White, which plans to begin a limited schedule in Spring of 2012.

Women’s lacrosse will be the 19th athletics program at SDSU and first new program since adding women’s track and field in 2000.

SDSU is also planning to add a women’s sand volleyball team, aside from having Lacrosse. This is to comply with California State University gender equity requirements.

San Diego is moving forward, even if other schools are cutting sports due to economic troubles.
