A lot has changed since 1911, when SCU’s new engineering program started out with just five students enrolled as undergraduate engineering students. These days, more than 1,600 students are studying civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering, as well as bioengineering, applied mathematics, and engineering management and leadership.

According to source, Santa Clara University scored high marks in the STARS program, the nation’s first comprehensive sustainability rating system for colleges and universities. STARS, developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), stands for Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System. It’s a voluntary, self-assessment tool to gauge progress toward sustainability on college and university campuses.

SCU is one of 242 higher education institutions in the STARS program, and received a silver rating, which is determined by surveying three overall areas: (1) education and research; (2) operations; and (3) planning, administration, and engagement.

SCU has pursued many initiatives in the past decade to become more sustainable. They include:

Installing a smart microgrid, which ties its power source, transmission distribution, and even consumption data to weather reports, thereby maximizing energy savings;

What initially seemed like a sure win for Santa Clara transformed into desperation for the Broncos Saturday night. Racing back in the final minutes of the game, Santa Clara fought to start West Coast Conference play with a winning record, but the University of San Francisco prevailed, 74-67.

Trailing 65-57 with just over three minutes left to play, Santa Clara sophomore guard Kevin Foster pulled up for one of his signature threes. Seconds after it left his hands, the ball casually drifted through the net; the fibers whipped together as the ball fell to the floor.

Foster’s three consecutive three-point shots dropped within a minute and a half of each other and gave Santa Clara the lead it had relinquished five minutes into the second half.

“I had confidence in my shot,” Foster said following the contest. “I know I’m supposed to take the shot at the end of the game because that’s what [my team is] looking for from me.”

After being lulled into doldrums by the team’s poor second half performance, the Leavey Center was suddenly ecstatic.

However, within a minute USF was up by five again.

“When you have a lead you have to go down and get a stop,” Broncos head coach Kerry Keating said following the game. “You got to be able to stop them on defense. We didn’t do that.”

Members of the crowd who had made the trip from San Francisco began chanting, “U-S-F, U-S-F!” It appeared that the Dons’ superstar guard, sophomore Michael Williams, had put the Broncos away with less than a minute left to play.

According to source, Santa Clara University, University of Delaware, American University, and Fordham University will square off in the four-team Cable Car Classic Tournament in Santa Clara December 29-30.

The tournament, now in its 44th year, will open with hosts Santa Clara playing Delaware at 6 p.m. tonight and Fordham and American battling immediately following the Broncos game. The consolation game will be played December 30 at 6 p.m. and feature the losing teams from the first set of games. The winning teams will meet for the championship game immediately following the consolation match up.

SCU is 7-6 and coming off a 99-79 victory over CSU Northridge where six players (sophomore Kevin Foster, freshman Evan Roquemore, sophomore Raymond Cowels III, junior Marc Trasolini, sophomore Chris Cunningham and senior Ben Dowdell) racked up double figures. Foster leads the team in points per game with 19.1 and total assists with 50. Trasolini and Roquemore are also averaging more than 10 points per game with 12.2 and 11.8 respectively.

At 5-4, Delaware is coming off a two-game losing streak. Prior to losing to Penn and Villanova, the Blue Hens were on a five-game winning streak. Blue Hens senior Jawan Carter is averaging 16.3 points per game and sophomore Jamelle Hagins is consistently in the top of the team’s points and rebounds statistics averaging 9.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He also is leading the team in blocks with 36 for the season.

Senior Vlad Moldoveanu has been a huge offensive weapon for the 7-5 Eagles. In the 11 games he’s played, Moldoveanu has been averaging nearly 20 points per game. Junior Tony Brewer has also been solid for the American offensive by averaging 12.2 points per game. Forward Stephen Lumpkins, a junior, has the highest average of rebounds per game at 7.6 and is the third highest scorer for the Eagles averaging 11.8 points per game.
