According to the news – The 37th annual commencement of Southwest Florida College last Saturday was testament of overcoming obstacles and personal re-invention.

The graduation ceremony was held at Harboside Event Center with 726 students, who will receive bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees and diplomas.

One of the student who received her associate degree in early childhood education is 60 years old Sopheap Sain Seng. She is already a teaching assistant at Villas Elementary for 13 years and already speaking six languages but she wants something more.

Brian Judd of Cape Coral with the age of 47 also received bachelor’s degree on elementary education. He is already working for years in the information field but decided to do something different.
The commencement speaker Rep. Gary Aubuchon of Cape Coral said that many of the students had to overcome challenges and turn obstacles into opportunities before reaching the graduation finish line.

According to the news – This coming June 27 Southwest Florida College will begin their two new information technology degree programs and three health care field degree programs.

They also have a new associate program that includes medical lab technician, network engineering and administration, health information management, coding technology diploma, an information technology and security system bachelor’s degree program and a medical billing.

President Dr. Stephen Calabro of Southwest Florida College said that they have 200 employers that can give attention to their new programs and can help improve their new existing programs. He also added that it is important that people understand that they don’t sit in an ivory tower and create new programs, they are actively seek input and then design and develop programs that meet industry needs.

He also said that the new programs were added because it was clear to them that there is a need for skilled individuals, trained in theses particular areas. They are college that listens to employers and they teach what the industry wants.
