According to source – Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans signed upon the SUNY 2020 law this afternoon, which authorizes five years of tuition hikes for State University of New York campuses and grants for SUNY’s four university centers-Binghamton, Buffalo, Albany and Stony Brook, in Suffolk County-to expand and spark economic development.

The law permits SUNY to increase undergraduate tuition for New York students by $300 yearly for five years. This means tuition will go from $4,970 a year to $5,270 this fall. It will eventually go up 30 percent over the five years.

The next part of the law arranges a grant program for the four university centers. They are applying for $35 million each-$20 million from the state and $15 million from SUNY-to use as seed funds for expansion and economic-development projects.

Suggestions from the four university centers call for including a total of 1.3 million square feet of building space, producing 10,000 statewide jobs and 6,000 construction jobs, and increasing campus staff by 4,500 people over five years. Yearly research funding would get a boost of $200 million a year, according to SUNY officials.

Many SUNY schools, including Binghamton, Purchase in Westchester County and Brockport in Monroe County, have sent out statements praising the new law.
