Southern University New Orleans was founded in 1956 and started operations in 1959 and located in located in New Orleans.Southern University New Orleans is an accredited liberal arts teaching institution which serves more than 3,100 students.

While there may be forces at work to try and shut down Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), it received some good news from Sen. Landrieu’s office last week, to the tune of $1 million in federal funds to strengthen its academic resources.

The funds are a part of more than $6.8 million distributed among Louisiana Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), and part of the U.S. Department of Education’s HBCU Institutional Aid Program. The purpose of the HBCU Program is to provide financial assistance to establish or strengthen academic resources, financial management, endowments and physical plants to enhance these academic institutions.
