BALTIMORE – Michelle Kurowski scored 30 points to leaf University of Maryland Baltimore County past Binghamton University, 55-38, in an America East Conference women’s basketball game at the RAC Arena.
The loss snapped the Bearcats’ three-game winning streak and also prevented BU from securing its third 3-0 conference start since joining the America East Conference in 2001.
Junior guard Andrea Holmes led BU (9-7, 2-1 in the America East) with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
At one point, Kurowski scored 13 straight UMBC points in the first half as the Terriers built a 20-8 lead with 10:10 remaining. Kurowski hit her second 3-pointer of the half with 1:57 left and UMBC (8-8, 2-1 AE) led 29-16 at the break.
“We really just didn’t come out with the intensity and the focus we needed to beat this team,” said BU coach Nicole Scholl. “You can’t get down early to them because they play a style of basketball where they use the entire 30 seconds before they take a shot.”
BU cut the deficit to 38-29 on Holmes’ 3-pointer with 11:40 remaining, but Kurowski scored 12 points and UMBC went on a 17-9 run to end the game.
“I thought they put a lot of pressure on us early on” Scholl said. “We haven’t seen anything that extensive and it took us by surprise. We got down and we pressed a little bit and started taking shots we don’t normally take.”
BU travels to Maine on Saturday afternoon and visits Hartford on Monday night.

Bealefeld has a high school diploma, will enroll at UMUC
Baltimore’s top cop is adding another obligation to his busy schedule next month: part-time student.
Speaking at a ceremony Friday for a group of officers enrolled in a leadership certificate program at the University of Maryland University College, Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III disclosed that he would soon be going back to school himself.
Bealefeld has a high school diploma. He dropped out of Anne Arundel Community College to join the police academy after suffering a sports injury that dashed his hopes of earning an athletic scholarship.
“It’s something he’s always wanted to do,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
Guglielmi said Bealefeld will pursue a degree in criminal justice at UMUC. Bealefeld did not return an e-mail message seeking clarification on his plans.
