According to the news – University of California, Davis reseachers Donald Land, who is also a Chemistry professor and Kymron deCesare, who is university lab manager are running a startup medical marijuana testing facility in West Sacramento. They called it Halent Laboratories. Land and deCesate both believe in the therapeutic effects of cannabis.
According to Land, his brother died from HIV/AIDS and his mother died from cancer and they both experience great pain and without access to medical marijuana. He said he’s intent on removing the social stigma of pot for patients who can benefit. He also added that Part of what they are doing is legitimizing cannabis for medical use by certain people.
DeCesare said he is a medic in Vietnam. He is using marijuana to treat his nervous stomach and migraines. He also added that he wants patients to have access to safe and tested medication.
The spokesman of University of California, Davis said they allow employees to work off campus as long as they adhere to rules that include time limits and reporting requirements.
According to source, Scientists at the University of California, Davis are trying to turn technology developed to test wine in the bottle into a system for detecting liquid explosives at airports.
If the technology works, passengers may once again be able to take large bottles of water and soda cans through security, the scientists told the Sacramento Bee.
Those items have been restricted since 2006, when authorities say they foiled a terrorist plot to carry liquid explosives on flights.
“For (security officials), success is they hand you your water bottle back instantaneously and say, ‘Get out of here,’” Matt Augustine, the lead researcher, said.
The project began with the development of a modified MRI device that was designed to tell whether wine in glass bottles had turned to vinegar, Augustine said.
The researchers found the system could also work on other substances, including gasoline and shampoo, and wrote a proposal to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which provided an initial grant of $800,000.
By bombarding the bottles with radio waves, researchers could identify the chemicals in each container.
Now they are in a race with other scientists, including researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, to get the system to work on a metal can.
Augustine and his colleague, Joe Broz, said the problem was that high-frequency radio waves provide the most precise picture of molecular structure. But

Sacramento volunteers are welcome as the UC Davis food pantry called The Pantry opened today to hand out free food and several types of basic hygiene and toiletry products to needy UC Davis students. Many UC Davis students are going hungry and are in need. Some UC Davis students living away from home can’t afford to eat enough and aren’t able to commute home to dinner with their parents. It’s a risk, but needed. It’s hoped that people won’t take advantage of the free food and basic toiletries offering.
That’s why UC Davis, in the Sacramento-Davis regional area today opened a free food pantry to provide meager meals. Due to rising tuition rates, lack of part-time jobs, and parents’ dire financial straits, numerous University of California, Davis students are going hungry, unable to afford basic staples. But today The Pantry at UC Davis opened to offer some free food to students. Check out the January 13, 2011 Sacramento Bee article by Laurel Rosenhall, “UC Davis Food Pantry Aids Students in Need.” You also can volunteer to hand out free food to UC Davis students.
Also, according to The Pantry’s website, UC Davis wants you to donate money to “ASUCD”. The Sacramento Bee article notes you can mail checks to The Pantry, UC Davis, One Shields Avenue, ASUCD 347 Memorial Union, Davis, CA 95616. For further information, check out the website of The Pantry. To donate, a different address from the one listed in the Sacramento Bee article is listed on The Pantry’s website. That address for donations is: The Pantry, 21 Lower Freeborn, One Shields Ave. Davis, California 95616.
Groups: If you are interested in volunteering for The Pantry’s adopt-a-week program e-mail the Assistant Director at ThePantryVolunteer@gmail.com. The Pantry utilizes a unique program called “adopt-a-week” that entail different centers, clubs, sports teams, fraternities, sororities and service organizations volunteering to staff The Pantry for one week. This requires ten hours of service (in one week) for any organization/center that chose to adopt a week.
Those who volunteer will have a short training session, and will spend their week working in the actual pantry handing out food and personal items to UC Davis students that come to The Pantry. If your group is interested in holding a food drive or an event with the proceeds going to The Pantry, we will be glad to help coordinate, work on, and publicize your event.
Because The Pantry is almost entirely donations based, it encourages and appreciates any group that doesn’t have the time to staff The Pantry but wants to support it to help coordinate an event.

UC Davis scientists are changing their navel orangeworm research direction after a sixth-grader showed that the major agricultural pest prefers pistachios over almonds and walnuts.
Conventional wisdom had been that navel orangeworms prefer almonds. “Everybody knows that navel orangeworms prefer almonds,” said Walter Leal, UC Davis chemical ecologist and professor of entomology. However, after his 11-year-old son proved that notion wrong in an elementary school science fair experiment, Leal’s lab has begun studying navel orangeworms’ attraction to pistachios to find more effective methods of controlling the pest.
