California Cuts Weigh Heavily on Its Colleges

According to source – The doorways towards the state’s latest school of medicine happen to be open, technically. A gleaming building with new labs is able to house researcher and students. However when the state budget was approved a week ago, the intends to open the school of medicine at the University of California’s campus here were shelved for at least another year.

The compromise to shut the state’s huge budget gap incorporated cuts state agencies of all kinds, but none were as deep as those to the state’s public colleges and universities. The state’s two systems were each cut by $650 million, plus they each could lose $100 million more when the state’s positive revenue anticipation don’t materialize. For both systems, the $650 million is roughly a 20 percent cut of operating money from the state.

This fall, the very first time, the University of California will require in additional money from student tuition than from state finances.

Valentine’s Day Centennial Gala Planned for Citrus Experiment Station

This Valentine’s Day, as couples struggle to find just the right way to say “I love you,” UC Riverside will be throwing a Valentine’s Day gala to celebrate 100 years of service by its Citrus Research Center – Agricultural Experiment Station.

The Valentine’s Day Centennial Gala on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007 at the Riverside Convention Center will feature PBS’s Huell Howser , host of “California Gold,” as master of ceremonies.

The festivities will begin with a wine-tasting (featuring Temecula Valley wines) and reception which will include historical photographs, Ansel Adams prints and citrus crate label displays in the convention center’s foyer at 4:30 p.m.

The reception will be followed by a centennial program and dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Raincross Ballroom. The dinner menu will spotlight citrus developed by university scientists and foods that have benefited from UCR research.

The Jonny May Jazz Quartet will provide live entertainment during the reception and dinner. Cocktail attire is suggested.

The gala is just the beginning of the festivities.

The following day, Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, there will be a day-long Centennial Symposium entitled “Agricultural Sustainability and New Technologies — The Next 100 Years” also at the convention center.

UC Riverside Gets $10 Million to Study Solar, Clean Technologies

The University of California, Riverside received a big donation recently that the school will use to study clean energy: Winston Chung, an entrepreneur and inventor of the rare earth yttrium battery, gave the school $10 million to study clean battery power and solar energy.

The donation is the largest in the university’s history and will serve as a boon to Riverside’s research departments. “The University of California, Riverside welcomes Mr. Winston Chung as an integral partner in our educational and research mission,” UC Riverside chancellor Timothy White said in a statement.

White asserted that professors in the Bourns College of Engineering, which will utilize a majority of the funding to fuel research in the burgeoning solar energy and clean technology fields, will mentor students and help bring about new advances to the clean tech spheres. “This gift is a wonderful testimony to the current strengths and aspirational future” of the college.
