University of California San Diego founded in 1960.

The University of California San Diego will host a project designed to test not only the most efficient way to run an electrical grid, but the most economical.

The campus is interesting to researchers because of the way its power system is run. About 82 percent of the power used there is generated there.

Another San Diego company, EDSA, is already working on developing computer power to coordinate the way the school’s grid is run. What Viridity will do is work out the most economical way to do that, taking into account how much it costs to buy and sell power in California.

EDSA, which helps workers control how power is made and used is like the conductor, he said. Viridity, which will figure out the costs, is like the composer, writing sheet music just before it’s needed.

The novel design of a deep muscle along the spinal column called the multifidus muscle may in fact be key to spinal support and a healthy back, according to researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Their findings about the potentially important “scaffolding” role of this poorly understood muscle has been published on line in advance of the January issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Trailing by three after a lackluster first period, the UC San Diego women’s basketball team opened the second half on a 9-1 run and never looked back, defeating visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 66-56 Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons will travel to Cal State San Bernardino to battle the Coyotes on Friday, before heading to Cal Poly Pomona for a date with the Broncos on Saturday. As is the case with all conference games, both contests will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. Entering the week in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings, UCSD can claim sole possession on the top spot with wins over San Bernardino and Pomona.

The UC San Diego baseball team is ranked fourth in the nation according to the Collegiate Baseball Division II Preseason Poll. Four California Collegiate Athletic Association teams were ranked in the top-40, including No. 4 UCSD, No. 7 Chico State, No. 24 Cal State Stanislaus and No. 40 Cal State L.A. Last year the Tritons compiled a school record 43 wins and came within one victory of advancing to the final day of the NCAA West Regional. Four of UCSD’s five 2008 ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region honorees will return in Garrett Imeson, Vance Albitz, Kirby St. John and Tim Shibuya. UCSD opens the season on Feb. 1 when it hosts San Diego Christian College at Triton Baseball Field.
