According to source:  The University of Central Florida was authorized by the Florida State Legislature in 1963, and opened in 1968 as Florida Technological University, with the goal of providing highly-trained personnel to support the Kennedy Space Center, located only 35 miles (56 km) to the east. As the university’s academic scope had expanded to encompass other disciplines, along with concerns over potential confusion with the Florida Institute of Technology, also known as “Florida Tech”, the school was renamed the University of Central Florida in 1978.

Students Can Shape UCF’s Future

According to source, Freshmen and seniors at the University of Central Florida can help guide their school’s future by completing a survey that measures student experiences.

The National Survey of Student Engagement was distributed to first-year and graduating students last week through Knights e-mail.

Students who received the survey are encouraged to provide feedback on ways to improve the educational experience at UCF by answering questions about their professors, classes, study habits, social habits and co-curricular activities.

The survey is distributed every three years by NSSEsurvey.org in cooperation with the UCF Office of Operational Excellence and Assessment Support. Input from the surveys is used to make improvements related to student learning, opportunities and success.

Results from UCF’s 2008 NSSE survey indicated that students weren’t feeling confident in their writing and critical reading skills. That feedback contributed to last year’s launch of UCF’s Department of Writing and Rhetoric, which provides writing-related assistance and training to students and faculty members.

The University of Central Florida was founded in 1963 and opened in 1968 as one of the campuses in the State University system.

University of Central Florida was awarded more than $300,000 in state grants to help commercialize research efforts.

Twenty-one projects from 10 state universities were awarded grants.

The money comes from $2million 2010 Florida Legislature appropriated for the State University Research Commercialization Assistance Grants Program.

University of Central Florida and the University of Florida both earned four grants, the most grants in the state.
