The University of Delaware has completed the threat it carried out only partially two years ago, when it dropped indoor men’s track, by today announcing it is also eliminating men’s cross country and outdoor track at the end of the current school year.

Delaware thus sheds two of its most academically successful and long-standing programs. This spring is the 100th anniversary of the men’s track team, which first competed in 1911. Delaware first fielded a men’s cross country team in 1919 and has done so annually since 1946.

UD cited “exercising fiscal responsibility and remaining in compliance with Title IX” as the reasons for the cuts in a statement this morning.

One of the methods in which schools may meet Title IX requirements is by having its athletic gender participation numbers fall in proportion with its overall enrollment figures. Delaware’s student body is approximately 57 percent female, meaning roughly 57 percent of its varsity athletes would also have to be female.
