According to the news – It was announced July 19 2011 by .S. Rep. Mazie K. Hirono, U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Senator Daniel K. Inouye and, Senator Daniel K. Akaka that twenty three education initiatives that cater to the needs of Native Hawaiin students will receive the amount of $13,364,065 to continue helping, improving and expanding and array of programs.
The money were awarded to state agencies, non-profit agencies, University of Hawaii and private firms that develop programs and curriculum for Native Hawaiian students from pre-school to college level. The grant money will be available on August1.
Senator Inouye said too many Native Hawaiians face a unique set of obstacles on their way to obtaining a quality education. Many of these children live in challenging communities and often have difficulty navigating risky environments to attend school and better themselves. I am very pleased and thankful that the Department of Education recognizes these challenges and continues to fund these critical initiatives.
