University of Idaho student advances in TV’s ‘Jeopardy!quiz game show

According to the news- The senior competing on television’s Jeopardy! Quiz game from University of Idaho is covering this year’s tuition hike.

Mark Runsvold already won three games, advancing the show’s circle. He is a senior in Moscow school’s College of Letters Arts and Social Sciences. He will face the tuition hike of 8.4 percent together with other UI students.

According to Hailing who lives in Moscow, the intention of Mark Runsvold on the Jeopardy! Quiz game was not to embarrass himself. Runsvold now won at least $103,000.

Runsvold said he is preparing for for the show by skimming trivia on the Internet — and by reading Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings’ memoir of his remarkable winning streak on the show in 2004 when he won a record 74 games.

Washington State University and University of Idaho terminates Wheatland Express contract

According to the news – Washington State University and University of Idaho officially terminated their agreement with Wheatland Express commuter shuttle.

They announced July 20, 2011 that the university is not financially sustainable anymore. They actually have $140,000 per year contract.

It was year 1990 that the shuttle service established to help staff, students, faculty and community member move between two campuses.

It is also said that Moscow Valley Transit service will not be affected about the termination of Wheatland Express and no employees of Wheatland express will lose jobs.

University of Idaho Receives Donation for Bioenergy Research

The University of Idaho has received funds amounting to $25,000 from Texas-based APT Advanced Trailer and Equipment owned by Randy Hill for researching the possibility of extracting energy from wood biomass.

With this donation, the university will install a model pyrolysis unit, which can burn without oxygen. When it is used with organic substances such as wood, a biofuel and a bit of charcoal is produced. According to Armando McDonald, professor of wood chemistry and wood composites, who does research on pyrolysis to make bio-oil, the process involves thermally cutting the wood into small pieces, giving rise to about 60 % bio-oil; 20 % syn-gas, which is a gas mixture; and 20 % char, While the gas mixture fuels the whole experiment, the char can be used as a conditioner to treat the soil.

The company has also gifted and paid for the installation of a biomass drying trailer at the university steam plant. In June 2010, the company had proposed to the university that it would set up a national bioenergy research center at the university, promising more than $700,000 for future bioenergy research.

University of Idaho Core Curriculum

The University of Idaho in Moscow was the first university in the state founded in 1889.

The University Committee for General Education will collect input from all faculty, staff and students about proposed changes to the undergraduate Core Curriculum that would go into effect next academic year.

The current Core Curriculum includes 33 to 34 academic credits all students are required to earn in order to graduate from the University of Idaho, excluding students who transfer to UI, said Core Curriculum Director Jean Henscheid.

The proposed changes include continuing to require a mandatory first-semester course for all incoming first-year students but allowing students to choose between a course like Core Discovery and a course in their academic major.
