According to the news – University of Illinois Board of Trustees has voted 6-2 last July 21 to shut down aviation program at the conclusion of the 2013-2014 academic year. The program actually started year 1946.

Some of the members of the faculty criticized the decision. Robert Easter, University Vice President and Chancellor said that he is hoping that the decision would not end the flight-training opportunities offered by the Institute.

He also added that notwithstanding the proposal to discontinue the degree programs and to close the Institute, the campus is actively investigating ways to keep flight training opportunities available for its students. Specifically, the campus is engaged in ongoing conversations with other institutions of higher education regarding how to support their possible interest in creating local flight training programs.

He also said in his remarks that Although the institute graduates successful students, it has had a pattern of declining applications and admissions over the past ten years, also estimating that a savings of $500,000 to $750,000 a year would result from the closing.
