According to the news – The system trustees of University of Maine approved a proposal to build a brand new observatory and planetarium at Orono Campus. Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Jeff Hecker said that there are about four hundred students who take astronomy courses every year. He actually believes that the brand new observatory and planetarium will boost the programs of school and at the same time give research chances.
The present observatory of the university is built in year 1990 and the planetarium was built in 1954. Jeff Hecker also added that it’s long overdue to move up with newer technologies. Our observatory actually dates back to 1901 and so we’re long overdue for an observatory. What we envision is building a complex where these two facilities will be co-located
The estimated amount to spend in the project is 5.2 million dollars. Jeff Hecker said most of the money came from institutional funds, fund raising campaign and anonymous gift.
