According to source, The University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team held Marymount University to just four second-half points, as the Eagles gained a two-game lead in the Capital Athletic Conference standings with a 45-21 win over the Saints last night in Arlington.
UMW was led by juniors Rachel Martin and Jenna McRae, who scored nine points each. Martin had five rebounds to lead the Eagles, while McRae added four. Marymount was led by eight points each from Beth Wiggins and Maame Amponsah.
The Eagles had a 19-17 lead at halftime, and pulled away in the second half by holding the Saints scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the period.
UMW outscored the Saints 26-4 in the second half and limited Marymount to 19.6 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers.
The Eagles will host Ferrum College at 7 p.m. tomorrow in a nonconference game.
HARVEY, HENDERSON LIFT UMW MEN TO VICTORY
Junior guard Mike Harvey had a game-high 22 points, and Ryan Henderson added 13 to lead UMW’s men’s teams to a 75-64 win at Marymount.
UMW jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the start and the Eagles (13-6, 7-4) led 36-30 at the break.
Marymount started the second half on an 8-0 run, but the Eagles responded with a pair of 3-pointers from Ryan Farrar and a 3 and two free throws from Harvey to make an 11-0 run and assume a 49-40 lead they would never surrender.
Harvey was 7-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-7 on 3-point attempts, while Henderson went 6-of-12. Freshman point guard Walt Smith had nine points, six rebounds, and six assists for the Eagles, who shot 47 percent from the field (29-62). Marymount was led by Reed Scott’s 14 points.
