Celebration on Bin Laden's Death

According to source, Erika Bornemann is off to an impressive start in her college basketball career at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The former Canton High standout is leading the Corsairs in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots 17 games into her freshman season.

After averaging 17 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 57.7 percent from the floor in victories over UMass-Boston and Plymouth State, the 6-foot-2 forward was honored as the Little East Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. She also became the first Corsairs player to earn rookie weekly honors from the New England Women’s Basketball Association.

“Erika has the finesse required to succeed in our conference,’’ said UMD coach Amanda Van Voorhis. “She has a nice touch in the paint and she is able to step outside the arc and hit the three. She is growing more comfortable with every game, is playing with patience and poise early in her career, and is getting a lot of attention from our opponents as she is consistently’’ double- and triple-teamed.

Averaging 14.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, Bornemann had scored in double figures in 12 of 17 games. She is joined on the roster by former Canton High teammate Colleen Moriarty, a sophomore forward and co-captain who was averaging 9.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game; freshman guard Megan Sheehan out of Carver High, who was averaging 6.1 points and 2.6 rebounds; freshman forward Tahirah Gibson of Norwood; and sophomore guard Shannon Singletary of Brockton.
